Does anyone have basic settings/advice for hunting in an area with a high concentration of nails?

I took the Gold out to a site where the ground is slightly mineralized and infested with square nails. The machine would GB in the 2 o'clock position, I also had the iron volume in the same position. The sensitivity was at 45 and discrimination in the 10 o'clock position. I hunted in the slow mode with both toggles forward. Earlier in the hunt I had the discrim in the ALL position was receiving a lot of false signals. After digging one of these false signals (a square nail) I placed it on a log and gently raised the discrimination until the good high chirping tone crossed the threshold to grunting, which was the 10 o'clock position. I continued hunting, it did sound better as expected, I heard more solid grunting. Shortly I returned to that log where I rested the square nail and air tested the nail, it was barely audible at 5 inches. It seems I lost depth. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.
