does moisture increase target depths?

Careful, David. The "expert" physicists say there is no such thing as a halo.
Well you know how them 'ex-spurts' can be. :)

I don't really know of any scientific studies to support all this, so I've chosen my words carefully; such as "likely" and "probably" and "it's believed..."

I do believe Fisher did publish some data along these lines, way back when they were still doing newsletters. But I cant recall the details. So it remains at least plausible that the halo effect/soil moisture connection does exist - and it does enhance detection.
Although, I'll allow that it may just be one of those lore items that we love to tell newbies so as to impress them.

Normally the deepest coins i dig are about six inches in dry dirt.
Where soil has moisture very deep (it has a buttery texture) I have detected coins at nine to ten inches.
This seems to translate to the size of coil being used, gti 2500 stock 9" coil. Not using All Metal. (Haven't figured that beast out yet.)
Also with moist soil i would guess those verticle coins ding a little more often.
