Does the Excalibur float and what to do if I drop it

I've yet to go out in the surf with the Excalibur but this January to April I will be out every day I can with it down in Florida.

Just a few questions.

If I drop the Excalibur, and have to swim, will the Excalibur float or will I have to attach it to my belt so I won't lose it?

I was wondering that because last year when I was out with my 1280X, I had to drop it because I stepped over a drop off in a fresh water lake which used to be a quarry. I had to swim in order to get back to where I could walk again. Luckily, the 1280 fell right at the edge and I was able to find it. If it had fallen over the edge, it would have been 70 feet down. I would have lost it for good.

Also the same with the long handled scoop. Attach it to my belt or put a rope with a float on it? Or any other suggestions?

I tether mine to a d-ding on my belt. I can turn it loose for any reason and have both hands free. Only way to go in my book. I also tether my land machine. It keeps persistent children from taking my detector while I'm busy retrieving a target.

Steve, No EXCALS' float!! You have to tether it unless you want to rely on your headphones to drag it behind you while you are trying to swim for your life!! I tether mine with a
short black BUNGEE that came in a plastic container with approx. 10-12 bungees in the container. They have an ORANGE RETRACTABLE KNOB on the end of the Bungee, and I run the open end of the Bungee thru the Armstrap SLIT in the Armcup, and then run the KNOB END thru the OPEN END, and pull it TAUNT. Then I slip the Bungee on to a Large Brass Retractable Clip on my 2" Dive Web Belt. That way whether I am detecting in the water or on the beach, I can let go of my detector, and it only drop down to around
my knee area, and there is NO STRESS on the Headphone Cord!! You can buy the Large Brass Retractable Clips or D-Ring type clips, that are attached to a metal loop, that slides on a Scuba Belt or any belt up to 2" wide at ANY SCUBA DIVE SHOP!!
P.S.: The container of Bungee Cords are not expensive, around $5-$7, if I remember correctly, and the Brass Retractable Clips mounted on a metal loop are ONLY a Couple of Bucks. HH, Les Robinson

you dont ever have to worry about loosing it,iv got pipe foam at top of shaft so i can let go of the coil/shaft and it will float like a bobber.

If your scoop handle is hollow, inject some foam into it or force a "noodle" inside.

The Excal's don't float.......... I have my controls hanging form my neck and the shaft is attached to my neck harness with a bungee so when I let go of the shaft it is right there for me to reach it without any bending. The Sunspot scoop is just held in my hand. I also wear a inflatable suspender type foliation device that is inflated with a pull to the cord for if I step off into a drop off. But when I am out neck deep. I slid my feet along feeling for the bottom all the time.

sorry Mike i was gone for Xmas and just read your post...the harnes is a Minelab 2100 battery harnes and i just hip mount all my detectors on it.works great!

How much was it? how about the buckes and such on it, are they plastic, stainless or something that might rust?

the buckles are plastic quick snaps like on a life vest..i gave $35 for it on Ebay..and there is one on there now!
