Hi everybody I have been using a garrett ace 250 for about 2 years now, and I really do thinks its a great little unit, I have found many treasures with it. I feel I am missing out on some deeper stuff though, and some discrimination tech, I would really like to get a minelab, i have been looking for an explorer ll used,I would like 2 here some opinions on these minelab detectors, Has anyone made the jump from an ace 250 to a minelab? is the cost really worth the tech.? If I get one I plan to use it alot and try my best to learn the machine as I know this is key to success in this hobby. someone please help me justify the cost of buying a mine lab exp ll an se or any other minelab for that matter. Or just give me your opinion on which unit to buy and why. I really love this hobby and would like to think Im moving up to the next level with a minelab, Help me decide what to do. I would like to buy a used machine so I could get a sunray probe with it, but im really stuck at around the 1000 dollar level.

Thanks in advance
Travis Wells

The answer is yes yes yes. The Explorer is a wonderful and different machine. You will notice a difference immediately. There is no machine like it and you wont be disappointed. Check with Richard at backwoods detector sales, he sometimes gets some in that are used and he is a straight up guy. I have used several types in my short coin hunting experience and I get frustrated trying to help my daughter with her 250.

You won't go wrong with any Explorer, just give yourself time to learn it. And for $1000.00 you should be able to get a great used one with the probe.

Travis, I have an Explorer II in excellent shape w/the original box and all the paperwork that I would consider parting with. The best part is I just had the new style Sunray probe installed less than a month ago. I love this machine but I was thinking about getting the E-trac so that I could download some programs. If you are interested then you can contact me at aaronhatz@hotmail.com.

Hey hey well I have really never used anything but a Minelab and dont think I will. I worked my way up the Minelab line and now have an Explorer SE, and think its gonna be a great season. Well hope this helps and good luck, just stick with it. GET THE MINELAB :super:

I think the biggest challenge will be the weight... they are heavy. They arent as difficult to learn as some people make it seem. Believe me there are worst ones out there. They are pretty forgiving and will work with about any adjustment as good as any machine. For $1000 you should be able to get one with the probe and Pro coil.

For $1000 I'd look for a lightweight Fisher F75 LTD, but you might have trouble finding one used as the demand is high. I've owned both the LTD and an Explorer-II for years and found the LTD to be deeper in my soil detecting silver coins. If you are set on Minelab, then the EX-II is an excellent choice, especially with an add-on Pro coil and a 5" or 6" eXcellerator coil. The standard coil with the Ex-II is very good, and if you find a smaller eXcellerator coil, the total package for a nice used machine should set you back under $750. If $750 were your limit, that would be my choice regardless of brand.

My hunting buddy Ricardo, who caused me to get an Explorer, went from an Ace 250 to an Explorer XS and his finds went up Quantum levels.I went from always spanking him on finds with my Whites M6 Vs. his Ace,to being spanked when he switched to the XS.
