Drapped Bust 5C in junk bucket

Long cold 4 day weekend in Cleveland. May get out a little this afternoon as the sun is warming things up to around 43F. Cleaning out the buckets of junk and odds and ends the past 3 days. This morning I came across a bent up disc that had white corrosion on it. I thought it would be an aluminum play money piece because of the white corrosion. I hit it with my brass brush and could not believe my eyes when I read "UNITED STTES OF AMERICA" and "5C". I really didn't know what it was. After checking the coin book, I found that it was a Drapped Bust Half Dime. I have never found a Bust coin before. I have no idea where I dug this or why it had white corrosion all over it. I would think that it could be black , but have never seen a silver coin corroded like an aluminum piece, or a coin found in Salt Water. Isn't this a great hobby, when you can make a great discovery just clean up some junk?

a draped bust is a gorgeous coin. too bad you don't remember where you picked that baby up...

Wow! A two time find...and a great one at that...I bet you started cleaning all the junk items in that bucket like a crazed maniac after you found that.
 
Goes4ever, I think it is a 1836 large 5C. This coin was corroded like stuff I have dug in salt water. I keep all of my salt finds separate in bags, so I know it was not from Cancun of the Dominican Republic. I don't even know why I kept it or why I decided to give it a try to clean it. After I brass brushed it, I put it in my vice between two pieces of wood to straighten it out. It still has lots of bumps like I have seen on some aluminum and copper coins, but never on silver. I didn't even mention that I also had a 1902-O Barber Dime. That one showed up when I tumbled the clad coins. When I went to the bank, I had $240 in quarters, dimes and nickels. I am sure that no one would have given this Drapped Bust a second look because it was totally corroded with white oxidation. I thought at best that it would be an aluminum token. On the Barber, it must have been a dark day and the blacked tarnished coin covered in dirt. I probably just put it in the trash part of my bag. I guess the lesson is to look closely at everything before you discard it.

I think that is a capped bust not a draped bust. Still a very awesome coin! I have yet to find any bust coin.
