Dug another good target with high ferrous number

Went to an old home site with moderate to extreme trash. I have hunted this area once before. My etrac was running at 25 in auto plus 3, so I elected to run in manual 25. With my disc set at 27, after a few minutes walking around, I decided to go over the area close to a well casing where I had dug an old wheat on the prior trip. I scanned the area, had a lot of falsing and detected nothing and decided to go to auto plus 3. I got a good repetitive high tone with depth gauge half way down, turned 90 degrees and the tone was scratchy. Turned back to my original position and watched the screen 24-41, 25-41 and it continued to alternate for the most part. Went to quick mask and the ferrous numbers stayed at 24/25 and about every 6th or 7th sweep it would jump momentarily to 12/13 and go back to 24/25. Before I dug I went back to manual 25 sensivity and heard nothing but what sounded like falsing. Dug down around 7 inches and recovered what looks like a copper thimbal. It read 12-40 on top of the ground. It seems auto sensivity has its place when using this machine.

Very interesting. The 12-40 makes sense as that's where a copper penny would normally hit. The 12-13 would lead me to believe that it would be a nickel and the 24/25 - 41 would be some type of steel. Wonder what made it read in the 12 and 24 FE range? What type of ground to you hunt in and was there any trash in the hole as well?

The soil in this area is not bad down at river basin level. As you go up in altitude and reach 900 feet plus, the soil does get more difficult-red clay. As far as trash in the hole, I really don't know, didn't check. I was using the 10x12 sef coil. The area was trashy in general. My point of my original post is just don't go by the numbers in disc mode, or maybe better said, don't always expect the ferrous numbers to be hanging around the 10-18 range. Also one needs to scan more than 2-3 times in quick mask before you make a no dig decision. Something else too, if one doesn't have a small coil they should consider using just auto or auto -1,-2,-3. in trashy areas. You might be surprised what pops out of the ground. Cheers
