Dug my deepest coin with deus today

squirrel1

Well-known member
I dug my deepest coin today and a deep bullet as well using the deus. Deus was configured with 11" coil, sens 93, 8khz, reactivity 1 silencer 0, disc 6.2. I had found a few coins in this spot over the last few months. I got this weak but consistent clear higher pitched growl with just the tip of horseshoe showing. It was a consistent signal and coil speed could be varied slightly and still get the signal. The ole number 98 kept coming in the screen. I haven't been over a deepie with deus and 11" coil with version 3.2 and I wondered if the new version acted the same as the older 2.0 version. Seems it does. I just wished I would of notched out 98 and 99 and swept my coil over it to see what I would have heard. Maybe next time. The wheat penny turned out to be 11 inches down. With same settings I dug a 10 inch bullet, 2 way signal only. Signal was good but at the end while sweeping it was extremely chopped. Pinpoint indicated small target. Screen showed no VDI on the best audio producing sweeps with just the sliver of the horseshoe showing. I would have bet the farm it was deep nail/iron, and since it pinpointed so small I dug it.
Here's the surprising part. While detecting the site today I never saw any bars on the iron meter. While sweeping both of the above targets the iron meter started producing 1 to 3 bars on sweeps. I had seen this before at an iron infested site with deus using 9 inch coil over 2 good targets both precivil war era buttons. I attributed the iron bars to maybe the iron bits in the site. I'm not so sure now.
I love the deus. I usually sweep any and all blips I hear on original sweeps and try and maybe vary speed a little to see if in fact I get a signal/better signal. The soil in this area looks dark and horrible with red streaks on clay running through it.

This is some good info--I can't wait to use my new larger coil to see if I've been missing some really deep ones. Good job--what year was the wheatie?

A 1923 wheat in horrible condition, could barely read date under a real strong loop. This area is currently pasture. House stood from around 1920 and burned in 1957. Weather was threatening and this spot is easy access in the event of rain. Plus I figured detector stick time is good no matter where you go. I can tell you this. Don't let the iron meter reading be your decision not to dig a target. I have seen the iron meter come up before over a good to marginally sounding good target. And every time except one 98 was flashing in the screen. I want to get over another deepie and see the 98 with weak but audible tone and notch 98-99 and listen and watch. I for one will not be notching out any of the 90 somethings. In a park especially hard hunted I figure one will leave the deepies behind. I can deal with the big iron another way and take my chances. I wish I had my V3i with me. It would have been interesting to see what it would have told me. I will in due time. There is one thing I think a lot of deus nonbelievers don't realize. Coil management, meaning how you sweep and how much you re sweep is very valuable when it comes to detecting deep finds and trashy/iron laden areas. I know for a fact it's difficult at best to be able to swing a coil on the other flagship detectors. The V3i and CTX are heavy and not as nimble as the deus. I can stand in one spot with deus and sweep the coil and listen for any and all irregularities in sound and resweep all questionable spots with ease. And I will vary my sweep speed over the questionable spots too, sometimes with as many as 4 different speeds. Hard for me to do with boat anchor weight detector.

Squirrel (tnsharp)--thanks for the details! I agree with you on the notching in the 90s...impact on deep targets is likely, but like you, I need to get over one of those targets and try the notch to see/hear the effect. Thanks again and look forward to more of your posts!

Lots of good info about your targets - I remember digging an 11" 3-ringer as my first relic find with the Deus, it too wasn't anything more than a desparate blip without any VDI!!! Please keep relaying info about the deep, whisper-type targets...I think you will find that there are a lot of us who want to master this part of the machine - the deep, non-VDI hits!

Info sharing is where it's at. We can all get better. The all metal modes on deus probably haven't gotten the attention they deserve. The manual is a bit sketchy on them. I know this gent in England has air tested a few coins in one of the all metal modes and holy moly it gave sound a lonnnnnng ways from the coil. I have an area that's not to trashy, I may play with the all metal some. It may be useful in those areas that have produced a lot of coins and are somewhat clean and where you can do say do more unlimited digging.

If I were going to give XP some advice it would be 3 things:
#1 release next version so we can reduce tone to zero in selected tVDI areas
#2 take the default TX=3 off of the 4khz freq setting
#3 release CDrom showing deus in action i.e. over deep targets, in heavy iron over target, how various setttings affect detector

EXCELLENT post Squirrel. I have noticed the same behavior on my Deus on deep targets as you have eloquently explained. I have yet to notch anything out on the Deus, choosing to torture brain and my hearing listening for the deepeies in full tones. I have started paying with notching out tones in lieu of discrimination setting up the Deus in decreasing discrimination so as not to hinder it's depth.

Thanks for the posts, you have put into words that which I am unable!

I did a few test the other day with notching. A gent who post here runs a trashy park setup with 0-69 and 94-99 notched. He does real well it seems. Only thing is you are depth limited. I think the gent said in the configuration I mentioned he could still hit 8 inch dimes in his ground. I would recommend maybe staying away from full tones and notch and try this. Run a three tone setup with disc say at 6. If after silver only, set tone to lowest freq in your first 2 tone breaks. At around 69 breakpoint run your tone freq to max. Now when your sweeping you should only hear one of three things- nothing at all, low tone, and high tone for the higher conductors like copper and silver. You see the full tones are harder to decipher. I believe in the KISS principle and my ears do to. In the setup I'm recommending you will still dig some can slaw and some tabs but if you'll listen to your audio you can pick a lot of the trash out. Now you may want to try and build yourself a nickel only program. I think the ole nickel is generally what's left in parks in pretty high numbers. The ML machines are not the best on them. Just remember when you change freq unless you have Normalize selected the different coins will respond generally wilth different VDI#s. So when you start notching and setting your tone breaks keep this in mind.

Thanks for all the great info. Squirrel !

And yes, a DVD would be nice ( for those who can't watch Gary's video series on the internet ) - heck - a nice DVD video came with our Daughter's $200.00 - Ace 250 !

Thanks for the info, people. I've seen 98's and just ignored the signal. Squirrel, great post and info. Still learning here. Tks-Mark

Deep targets will often hit in the 90s no matter what frequency you run. I notched 94-99 out in 4 khz for the longest time, but recently tried unnotching all the way up to 98-99 and some deep 8" plus coins rang up 97 and 98. Switch frequencies and they stay the same sometimes. Seems like it takes longer to fiddle with the settings than it does to actually retrieve the target, and sometimes you are rewarded with a deep coin! Try it out at some places where deep coins have been found and I guarantee it will pay off...eventually....
