Dug up a giant Crotal bell

jabbo

Didn't know they made them this big. Can't see in photo but a large section is broken off, couldn't find it. Plus a smaller crotal bell and a huge buckle. Found at an old foundation in the woods a good 1/4 mile from the road. Tons of trash there, so couldn't find any coins. Foundation looks to be early 1800's. I saw a few digs and scrap metal, someone detected there recently. The parks maintenance crew who were at another location told me about this foundation. They said the whole area, about 3000 acres, was purchased by the township from several farmers. It was purchased because the township intended to use it for a specific purpose, can't remember what it was. After they bought it and looked at it more carefully they realized it was not good for that purpose, so there it sits. More tax payers money down the drain.

Nice finds dave.. I have found a fragment or two of one of those large croatal bells before but never one nearly as intact as that one.. I have quite a few of the smaller ones of course...

WOW I guess that is a giant crotal bell!

Great recoveries, Dave. That is indeed a large crotal bell. I found one about the same size threee weeks ago and turned it and a smaller bell over to the Monmouth Cty curator, who is very happy to receive any artifacts that she feels links the properties with their former history . HH
