E Trac came today..sitting at home waiting for me!

My wife called me and said that my detector just arrived. And, I'm stuck here at work...
The ironic part of this situation is that we have had beautiful weather all month, until last night and today...50 mph winds, 9 degree temp (without the wind chill factored in), snow and just plain miserable conditions. So, guess I'll spend the next evening or two on the forums getting tips and learning the machine. I'm sure I'll have questions tonight, please bear with this E Trac noob :usaf:

Cannot wait to get mine!!! good luck with the weather.

Thanks Ken, you as well. I see that you are getting the X-5 with it as well. That's what I ordered. I also orderd the 12x15 SEF to cover the farm fields and open areas around here. I figure the stock 11" DD (all around general purpose), the X-5 (trashy area coil) and the 12x15 (open field/area coil) should be a pretty good mix to start with.
I'm basing the mix upon what I currently use on my MXT Pro..950 (general purpose), 5.3 (trashy area coil) and the Super 12 (open area) that has been working for me.

Congrats on getting your E-Trac. Yeah the weath has gone from beautiful to crap overnight. Wait a few days and it should get better.

One item I didn't listed was Andy Sabich's E-Trac book. This book is a MUST read if you want to be really proficient with your detector. Read the factory manual a few times too.

Moving from a White's to the E-Trac can be a real shock. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get used to it. I wanted to throw mine in the closet the first couple times I used it because I felt I didn't understand it at all.

Great point Jason. I have both of Andy's books with the detector as well. There is a similar book for the MXT that I used called "MXT Edge". So you're saying I might want to be rested, relaxed and in a good mood before I even start to mess with the E Trac...

Andy's books are great and all....but you really need to visit Goes4ever's page. He has a lot of helpful videos and articles posted. I know I've learned a lot from there. His step by step set up on TTF is super easy to follow.

Going from a Garrett to the E-Trac was an experience as well! That and the sheer level of trash in the ground around here. I love it when they say you should try to learn it in cleaner areas. Those are mighty hard areas to find around here! But it is good advice if you have it. It took me 4 or 5 hunts to begin to get my brain wrapped around what it was telling me and it's much better now after a few months. Still learning a lot but it all makes more sense!

usafaviator -- I love the E-trac; been using it for about six months. The basics are very easy machine to learn. The more subtle nuances will come later. If you want to dive right in and try it out I'd suggest using in stock coin program for a couple of hunts just to get your feet wet while you digest the owner's manual. You're not at Tinker AFB by any chance are your?

Shawn,

Did you go to Big Boys Hobbies? That's where I go, Bart will shoot you right and help you after the sale too. I agree on the coil choices too.

@ Barber Dan: Thanks for the info...looks like I'll be spending some time there
@ Sailorman: One of the things (good and bad, I guess) about Nebraska is that there are a lot of clean areas to start in. Some of the parks in Omaha have been quite worked over, but I still plan to pull out the silver everybody missed.:detecting:
@ Agseeker: Good point on using the stock coin program to start put with, that will be my plan. I'm at Offutt in Omaha/Bellevue.
@ Ken: I ended up going with New England Detectors...best price I could find and excellent customer service/fast shipping. My plan is to do business with all the sponsors here (slowly but surely). The only experience I have is with Colonial (excellent experience), New England (excellent experience), a vendor on Ebay that sells the custom cammo mud/rain covers (excellent experience) and KC (no comment).

You are way to kind my friend, my knowledge of the etrac doesnt compare to Andy, I merely try to keep it simple and help new etrac users start off on the right trac........:clapping:

Just stay in Omaha and TOTALLY work that place out. Don't venture outside the city limits!!!! :poke:

Have fun with the new machine. Take care.

I don't really do a lot in Omaha, more in the surrounding areas and suburbs/farms. Really plan to expand out this spring if I can find time, maybe central Nebraska or somewhere like that...

Seriously though, most of my area is Omaha/Bellevue and points 20 miles or so west and south 20-50 miles. Being that this area is the oldest settlement point in Nebraska, it has been worked the hell out of. Hoping to find with the E Trac what I haven't been able to with my MXT Pro.

I also bring my detector everywhere I TDY in the US.

Good luck with that baby. I miss mine as I am here in Maui with my other machines. I was learning mine since last Mar and got 2 gold with it before I came here. Go slow and enjoy.

The 15 X 12 SEF coil is a great coil but it is heavy. If you're going to be swinging that thing for more than an hour or so, you may want to think about getting that swingy thing. I could not believe the difference between the 12 X 10 SEF and the 15 X 12 SEF. I can swing the 12 X 10 all day, but the 15 X 12 weared me out.

I built my own harness, and it worked pretty well today but I just bought Doc's bungee system from another member on the forum...plan to attach it to my harness to see how it works. I will give the 15 x12 a shot and see if it's for me...if not I'll probably put it in the classifieds and pick up a 10x12.
