I got out to an 1860 era park with spring for 45 min. at dark with millions of 2-5" deep rusted old crown caps.In an erea about 250' radius of the old spring you will almost always get 1 and up to 3 caps per 6" plug and I do not exgagerate. In all metal ferous with 2 tones you can hunt if you can stand all the low metal tones.I found the old eagle button that gave a good high tone in the hole with a cap.If it is not raining in the morning may go back and try with the little coil as I know there are a lot of old coins hidden among all those caps.the button is 9/16" across and has stars all the way around it with eagle in the middle with spread wings and head facing the left.Looks like a wire fastener on back.Sorry about the sad pictures but it is not very plain even with a loupe,Ray.
PS any help on what it is or how old would be much appreciated.

You will find the 8" coil should separate the good from the bad. I'm going to be detecting on one of my favorite Roman farm sites tomorrow so will be using the std pro 11.5 coil hoping it will pull out some good stuff. I will post the results as a new thread tomorrow.
