Does a E-Trac have a different number for a deeply buried aluminum can standing on end with a weak signal than a coin does? my sovereign can't tell the difference, it pinpoint signal is the size of a dime.
Thanks.:detecting:

Generally you can tell by lifting the coil off the ground to see where the target signal stops. If you can lift your coil a foot off the ground and still get the signal, chances are its going to be a can or some big object. A deep coin will loose its signal just a few inches off the ground.

So the answer is no it doesn't have a different number for a aluminum can right? notice my post a deeply buried can on end with a (weak) signal you can barely get, on the old meeter on my sovereign (550) a aluminum can was no. 502 and a coin was 500 with the new meeter it's 180 the same as a coin I just though a E-Trac would know the difference. Thanks.:detecting:

Remember, in Andy's book where he says in bold, these machines do no metallurgical test? A garbage can lid a 3' and a coin at 6" is how I explain it to people who ask.

the numbers on deep cans can often be the same as on a coin. the only difference is the sound. you can often hear the difference in the tone, coins have this sweet ripple sound to it but not to much of a ripple (really hard to explain) and a can is often to ... Solid sounding? very hard to explain but afte a lot of use there is a difference.

New to the forum, and the minelabs. I am still waiting for my Etrac to arrive, but I have been reading everything I can in the mean time.

So from what I have been reading, you can physically HEAR the difference in audio response on silver?

If so, that is AWESOME. I haven't been able to do that in 15 years! My old Garrett MasterHunter 7, may not have had great depth, but I could hear the sound of silver. I sat in my living room for hours waving clads, quarters and silver over the coil. In the end I could tell before I dug if my target was silver 90% of the time. If I will be able to do this again, I will be sooo freakin happy.
