E-Trac is not an Explorer. Enjoy your new machine.

I'd buy two and probably not need to use anything else :thumbup: These are the things that I saw early on that made me realize the machine wasn't for me but maybe for someone else who wasn't as familiar with an Explorer. I still think the E-Trac is a tremendous machine but not for me with the way I hunt with an Explorer in ferrous sounds in all-metal which I feel for me is the way to get the most out of the machine at all the old house, farm, and cellar hole sites I go to...I just never hunt parks. I think it's unfortunate that all the personal bashing occurs on the forum for those who are able to "see" the issues in their opinion and report them for the good of all yet still offend or infuriate others for doing so who take it all the wrong way unfortunately :sick: I have always sincerely appreciated much more experienced Explorer users such as yourself and others to the time to evaluate a new machine as objectively as possible to try to prove it is actually better...thank you and happy hunting!

Jim, I find this to be a very interesting statement... I was thinking the exact same thing after playing with the new ETrac last Sunday... I also remember telling the owner of the ETrac demo. model ( a local Minelab dealer/distributor) just how perplexed and baffled I was in the marketing techniques and behaviors that the company has demonstrated these past couple of years..... At any rate, I am hopeful that perhaps they will do just as you stated above and if the Unmasking Capability turns out to be truly enhanced and bullet proof, I'd probably be willing to give up a pretty good chunk of change for it....

I really do not think this is going to happen, for the reason I gave in my below. I have no proof but it only makes sense that the whole E-TRAC concept is based on having the ferrous numbers bunched up around 12. I believe this is what is behind it's advertised ability to "see through". Having most good targets in one ferrous area lends itself to the ability to ignore targets that are not in that ferrous range. If good targets were still reading all through the ferrous range then it would not have the ability to ignore trash as well. I am sure that they will refine it but I don't think you'll ever see the same sort of ferrous readout in the ET line.

I could be wrong but I don't think so. It's logical. Some might not like it but they will never put out an ET with ferrous numbers like the Explorer... then it would just be another Explorer. It makes sense to me to have and use both the SE and the ET.

I think they seriously crippled the E-Trac by cramming all the targets into the 12 line giving you only 50 good ID numbers so the targets have no separation. The Explorer definitely has a major advantage over the E-Trac when it comes to Target ID!!!!! Yes they gave the E-Trac many fancy new features and and enhanced performance except in the area of TID where they took 3 or 4 steps backwards!!!! When testing ti with gold rings many gold rings now read as tinfoil something they never did on an Explorer. Now you have to dig tinfoil to get gold. Again a step backwards due to FE-12 cramming. But if it has a few more inches of depth over the Explorer then it's something we will have to live with until they fix it by using the new faster CPU in the next generation of Explorer. Though if that were to happen no one would ever buy another E-Trac :) JMHO

No one is more disapointed than I am about where they routed the coin signals to. That was the most mind bending change I'll never figure out.
I have to make this work for me, because I traded my SE in for the ET. (Don't say it)
 
Ok I won't say it!!! ;) It's funny....you would think if they were going to remap all those targets in one line like that and pretty much force us to use Conductive Audio the least they could have done would have been to remap the iron to the opposite side of the screen so it would give a low tone instead of a high tone. That way if you wanted to hunt with an open screen in the trash you could! If they could remap all the other stuff into one line then remapping the iron should have been a breeze and would have made a lot more sense than placing it right under the coins. Minelab's Engineers certainly have a bizarre sense of humor :)

Maybe they're going to do upgrades that way and keep the people who bought the first ones happy.
 
They have already said that it is not upgradable through the port... they have also said that SE is the final Explorer.

That would have been a tremendous technology leap to take advantage of.
 
I agree. I play electric guitar and Line6 amps have used a USB port to update their software for years. According to what i have heard the prototype ETs had the ability but ML decided to block it, something about protecting their software. This is something I would send mine in to change, if they decide to make it available. I think maybe they could protect their software another way. Plus, if someone really wants to hack the software... they will hack it. A blocked USB port is not going to stop that.

Still, again I say, the ET will never be an Explorer. I am convinced that the remapping of the frerrous is a critical part of E-Trac, the thing that makes the un-masking possible. Without it, the ET would be an Explorer... and it's not.

Minelab crippled what could have made the E-Trac a true shining star... The ability to upgrade the software via the USB port. Obviously, if Minelab was interested in addressing some of the issues via software updates, they would not have blocked the port. The excuse that someone would be able to hack there software is laughable. As you stated, If someone truly wanted to hack the software, a USB port would not be needed. Sure is a good excuse if you don't want people asking for features to be added via some simple code changes....
