E-Trac missing targets

witreasure

New member
I recently made a test garden in a somewhat "trashy" area to learn sounds in trashy areas better. I buried a silver dime at 5 inches and a 10k thick gold ring at 4. My E-trac misses both targets, yet my AT PRO hits them both perfectly with only iron discriminated. I used a custom pattern (see pics) and I used Andy Sabischs pattern. My settings are as followed

Threshold 25
volume 30
gain 28
audio- normal/ tried pitch hold too
4 tones conduct
variability 29
tone limits 29
auto sensitivity 0-+3 (was around 21) tried manual from 10-24
Tried deep on and off
recovery fast on and off
trash density high
ground difficult
Some of these I adjusted with no luck

Any suggestions?

Recent test beds are good to test in for the E-Trac. Must be in the ground for a bit. I would also suggest if your already not, SLOW WAY DOWN. Minelabs do so much behind the scenes you have to sweep slow.

You stated you only had iron disced out on your AT Pro.Try only discing out iron on your E-Trac and see what happens. If you have a few old rusty nails you can use to set your rejection level of disc you will find your results are much better I am thinking.

does it hit those items bench testing at those depths? how long have you had the machine? is it new second hand?

Something is not right? The E-trac should have hit on those targets easily.

It is new, have about 50 hours on it. I sent it to Minelab a few weeks ago, they said it passed all bench tests but replaced the coil anyways.

I have a clad dime buried at 8 inches and it will not pick up either, even in quickmask. Of course the oil here is all red clay, which plays a major part in the depth. Is your soil highly mineralized and/or with red clay?

Try a smaller coil, I use the 6X8 SEF when the iron gets heavier.

Also, I run a minimal disc patter, just a bit more than yours (Fe 28 on down) and that seems to help, but only with trash density on high. That is a KEY setting on the E-Trac when using discrimination.

If the iron is really bad you can try TTF, but again, use a smaller coil.

I am a bit perplexed as to how the AT Pro would hit them and not the E-Trac. I consider the E-Trac a better machine, though perhaps the AT Pro is doing better with the trash? Not sure.

Hope that helped,
Albert

OK, found a solution, possibly?... I turned my sensitivity down to 5, yes 5! Apparently my yard has more trash than I thought )or mineralization?) One point I forgot to mention is that my threshold almost constantly nulls in my yard, I found a small area that didnt and I hit the targets on auto sens +3. Some areas still would not hit at all... Must be the trash is too thick? I thought the E-Tracs "see through" capabilities would over ride this, still cant believe that AT Pro would hit the targets (the numbers were bouncing a bit, so its a target I might not have dug) I will try a different property tomorrow and see how it goes.

Sounds like something is messing up your E-Trac. I have hit pennies and dimes down to 10-11 inches. I was hitting silver and copper SOLID in heavy trash with a 5 inch coil. I have also dug coins with nails in the hole, and coins (silver) with rust on it, so I know it can find coins in junk. It could be your soil, but without being there, we can only guess at solutions.

Im going to test other areas tomorrow. I doesnt seem right to me, I question the soil as well but Im surprised the AT Pro can perform in it and the E-Trac cant. I hate for there to be a problem, dont want to have to send it back to Minelab for 3+ weeks in prime hunting season. I have been hitting deep pennies and silver lately, just not in my yard.

You state you used a 5" coil he's probably using the stock 11" coil. If he can get his hands on a smaller coil I bet his results will be greatly improved. Either his yard is really trashy and or the soil is tough too. Lots for the coil to see under it and for the machine to have to process.

Maybe try the reverse and go to a more greatly yet discriminated pattern like "Bills trashy park pattern" and see if it hits on the items. The Etrac seems to work differently than most other detectors and works better with more discrimination.

I set up a coin garden with coins at a MEASURED 7.5 inches and could hit them instantly with my minelab x-70 3 yrs ago, got my etrac and it sings out loudly on them, even with my small coil....something doesn't sound right with your machine

I have strip pits here in Illinois where stock pro coil would not work or old cinder spoil areas.Put on 6X8 and was coin heaven ,but even with that my depth was reduced to about 7 inches max,but that was 5 more inches than any other detector user was getting.I would recommend to anyone using Minelab FBS detector get after market coil.

The E takes out most iron.........

You probably already tried this, but did you noise cancel in the area before swinging? Different channels give different results.

Yep, tried it. Sent to Minelab today. Hopefully they figure it out fast. Will let you all know what comes of it. Thanks for the input
