The lined shield indicates a general service mans button. With the Eagles wings in this position I think the button is post Civil War , probably Indian war. There are many good books on Military buttons. One of the best is the Albert book Record of American Uniform And Historicl Buttons. Is there a makers name on the back of the button?

Post civil war, possibly even a civilian copy.
