Earbuds

This has been brought up on other forums, thought I would mention it here. Went to Radio Shack Friday, bought a 1/8to1/4" headphone jack adapter and a $15 pair of earbuds. They work great on the 705. It's just too darn hot to wear regular headphones and I dont feel quite so much like someone can sneak up on me.
I pretty much zone out when detecting, but these still make me feel better.

I use earbuds in the gym, as easy as they can be pulled out I don't not think that I would attempt to detect with them. I have been using those $15 radio shack walkman type around the back of the head units and I'm happy with them.

I use a clip with a snap, like what you use for an ID badge. Run a couple of loops of headphone cord through the snap and clip to your shirt. Ear buds don't pull out.

BillF, I would say that as a rule they don't fall out, but we hunt some pretty knarley sites. I would expect that limbs, branches, and bramble would catch the wire and yank then out of my head.

That could be. I don't hunt in the woods, just parks, lawns and vacant lots, so these are working well for me.

Great idea. Summer is way too hot for headphones.

I tried some earbuds with my old F2, they were just too loud without a volume control. So, I'm gonna try another set now that I have the Xterra with adjustable volume. Thank for the reminder Bill!

Scott, I've been using them every time I go out. Not finding anything to write home about, but now I won't have worry that the freeway noise IF I DO FIND SOMETHING.
Haha.

Duh, why haven't I thought of this. Every kid you see has a pair in use. This Mississippi heat dosen't take long to get your ears all sweaty and your headphones want to slide around, I look like I got attacked by someone administering "Wet Willies" that went bad. Thanks for the suggestion. My wife got me a pair today, can't wait to try them.

Clad Daddy,
Swing by Office Depot or Staples and pick up a clip for ID badges. It should have a snap on one end and clip on the other.
Part way down the earbud cord, wrap the cord through the snap area then clip it to your shirt collar. When you inadvertently pull the cord, it will pull at your shirt collar first and not pull the buds from your ears. Hope it works for you as well as it does for me.

I wear hearing aids ,so I asked my audiologist about getting a set of hearing aid type earpieces with a wire that plugs into my detector. He told me that he could make an ear mold of my ears and send them to a place in Colorado that makes such an item. It cost me $200 and they work great. I made a small adapter box that clips onto my belt and from this box is a head phone cable so that the ear piece cable won't get caught on some thing and pull the ear piece out of my ears. The head phone cable plugs into my X-Terra 705.

I like the adapter box. A person could run the earbud cable inside their shirt.
Thanks for the great idea!

Hi, BillF, I also use bud earphones and have no problems,.I have also found that normal closed in headphones too hot and also bulky.
I usually carry two with me in case I damage a pair on a bush or low lying tree limb.

Happy hunting.

I am certainly no expert but without volume control on ear buds, you will need to lower the volume on the XT. I thought the common advice is to turn the volume full on the detector and lower it on the headset else risk missing those faint signals. I prefer not to wear bulky headphones but I prefer more not to miss a potential target. I am on "target"? Pun intended.

Since the Xterra has separate volume controls for speaker and headphones I have had no problems. In fact I can turn the volume up to maximum on the ear buds without any issues. I find I don't need to, however. It seems that 23-25 is plenty, even working next to the freeway.

I'm wondering if they have earbuds with a coil type wire so you can move around when you dig and not rip them off your ears.

I haven't seen that, but I did pick up some Auvio 33-284 wireless ear buds today off of "that auction site" for $22. They had bunch of open box sets.
Hope they work as well as some have said. It will be nice to not have a cord.
Like I told Atomicscott, I love using ear buds.

You will have to give us a report on how those work out for you. I would like to get rid of the cord also but do love headphones to keep my ears warm here in Montana when the weather turns cold for 6 months. :nopity:

I've used inexpensive earphone plugs for years. I like keeping one ear open. They cost around a buck each. Work just fine for me. Don't know why Minelab doesn't put both 1/4 and 1/8 jacks on the X-Terra line. They do on some of their others.
