Easter Weekend Hunts - silver and another ring

GrafeR

New member
The Star of David pendant and small dolphin thingy are stamped silver. Not too sure about the ring yet. It rang where gold usually does for me, but is not stamped. It also is crudely made so I don't think the ring is gold. But I just ordered a gold testing kit so I will test it later this week. Anyway, it's ring number 15 for the year. Also a cool dragon pendant...

Add in a "Puppy Love" dog tag, some tin pendant or earring, and a cool looking Pacific Trail zipper pull.

Then I found this neat "pineapple" cap bomb...

Then a beat up brass lock, dog tag, and $7.35 in change (which puts me over the $100 dollar target for the year)...So I'm a happy after some fun hunts :clapping:

Thanks for looking ... Ron

I hope you don't mind me asking because I am going to start asking as many people as I can where they hunt (not exact locations) and find these very good finds (if you don't mind my asking). I think that is important for some of us "newbies" to understand and not get frustrated (not me) about detecting. It might help them in their searches and I am sure research had something to do with it.

Don't mind at all ... Most of my finds are in local parks. My favorite parts of the parks to hunt are the field strips next to, or near, picnic areas. I have had very good luck in these areas. I seem to get less trash and more quality finds in these areas. My assumption is that people take jewelry off before playing in the fields, then they fall out of their pockets. I also get a lot of clad pocket spills. Rarely do I find silver coins. 90 percent of my hunts are in relic mode on my ACE 250.

Thanks Ron

I have been checking all the parking areas that have dirt or gravel beds. If you can imagine someone reaching in there pockets to retrieve there keys and all the change in there pockets (and other stuff f) that comes tumbling out...yea buddy!!! That is what I have been hunting. I have not gotten to much of the play areas or where the "small annual fair is held" I am saving that for last.

What kind of gold test kit did you get? I have a few. That ring might be gold. If the picture was a bit clearer or larger it might be easier to tell. Drop it from a few inches onto a desk or table and if it rings out its probably gold. Junk rings tend to thud. Not scientific but it works most of the time. Some brass rings ring out too.

My dolphins were not even gold plated. I think they are white brass. They thud when I drop them.

I've never found one of those cap bombs and I hunt sites where I should. Some day.

Just going to get the chemical (test acids) and scratch stone for now ... can't afford anything else at the moment. Thanks for the tip....I'll try the drop test. I keep going back-and-forth on whether it's gold. Part of me says it's wishful thinking...the other says it may be .... dunno .... we'll see when I get the kit.

The acid test for gold takes practice. I find it difficult distinguishing between various purities of gold using them. If I did it more often I would be better. Usually I can tell if and item is gold by looking at it. How an item reacts when rubbed on the test stone also usually indicates whether or not its gold. I own a Mizar electronic tester that I like a lot. The reagents are expensive but I find it fast and accurate or at least accurate enough for my needs. I have the cheapest one.

I use an acid test for silver that is a breeze.

I hope your ring is gold. It looks old to me. Check for tiny remnants of the mark. (A ring I found Thursday had just a tiny part of the 5 in 925 remaining.)

 John..agree, a ring is a ring

Chris, hopefully some day I will get a Mizar tester. For now I will have to practice with the acid testing. Can anyone tell me how non-gold reacts with these acids? No reaction at all? Thanks in advance ..

First you won't get a really good gold streak with non gold items. This is a problem with really high carat gold too. The acid will dissolve practically all non gold samples.

Practice when you get your kit. Try testing copper, silver and marked gold items. Nothing too valuable. Test in inconspicuos spots on the items. Unmarked gold plate items (or mismarked gold items) are hard to test with all test methods. You have to test through the plate and will probably have to damage the ring. Interpreting what is dissolved and what is still there is where I have a problem. It is sometimes degrees disolving. (For lack of a better word.)

You'll figure it out fairly quickly once you actually start doing it.

Thanks ... Using the 6x9. .. after a year of use I still haven't gotten the 9x12 or sniper coil. I'm finding plenty/lots of stuff so haven't felt the need ... yet ...
