Elimate Zinc pennies

Waterdog

Well-known member
I went to a place the other day and I could hardly move my coil (11 inch ) without hitting a zinc penny. Is there a way I can Notch out just Zinc pennies only? Thanks

I notch out 81 through 90 to eliminate the zinc pennies, BUT, I run the chance of missing a large gold ring. I have only found one gold ring at a higher number than 60 and that was an 18K, 10.5 gram band that came in at 85. Now, I only do this notching when I'm at the end of a hunt and tired. I've had hunts where I've found penny after penny after penny and have gotten very tired of digging them out. So I don't mind notching them out, in this example, to keep the hunt going a little longer. I don't think you can discriminate or notch anything out between 43 and 85 without running the risk of missing a gold or platinum item.

I decided last year to diggem and buy the golden dollars with them. I ended up with $125.00. You know that is almost enough for a Garrett Carrot! I found in the 83's-85's dimes and nickels colocated with a penny. Also some bus tokens, small sterling jewelry, and four gold rings. We all discriminate some in those situations whether with settings or by ignoring the vdi, at the price of a goodie. I know I sometimes don't feel like going after them, but I will either get them at the time or get them later. To each his own. Your decision is the best discriminator. You still get the exercise and therapy of just doing what you enjoy and getting some payback.

They sometimes read 85 if more than one either stacked or close by. I find 88 & 89 either a copper penny or dime. Mostly 89 will be a dime. Just grab a few and slip them in the ground in varied combinations and u can find out real quick. They are a real nuscience like the pop tabs which also has quite a range of tid's. Especially the ones broken in half. They read 55 same as a nickel near surface.
