elliptical coils

I have been using an elliptical coil (24X11") on a Minelab GP and it runs so quiet that I am wondering if this is the only way to go. Can anyone tell me why the elliptical coil seems better than the concentric coil - as I see it, or it an illusion on my part. Maybe it runs quiet but is balancing out the weak signals. Can anyone comment as I dont really understand how these thinks really work.

I don't know why the elliptical should run quieter, but then I am not familiar with the GP. What size "concentric" coil are you comparing with? Do you mean a mono?

Hi Sean there is no concentric coils avaiable for the SD series(commercialy)>The 24x12 is a mono.

Sorry for such a late reply but I have been bush.
The elliptical coil is the coiltek 24X12 UFO which can been seen on their website (www.coiltek.com).
It is really quiet and sensitive to small nuggets of less than 1g. Have not found anything at depth yet - largest about 20 grams at 6".
I have even found it quieter than the GP 18"DD.
