Elyptical coil on PI?

I was wondering why I don`t see an Elyptical coil for the PI detectors. I used one on a VLF machine and liked the coverage. Something like a 5" x 14" size would be nice. Is there any reason that these won`t work well? JCP/Ct.

Hi JCP,
Coiltek in OZ make elliptical coils for the Minelab range and they work very well indeed. My particular favorite is the 10" X 5" ellip mono which is unbelievable for sensitivity to small gold nuggets. They also make a 10" X 5" DD, a 24" X 12" mono, a 19" ellip DD and quite a few others. Cheers, Chris Hake.

I didn`t realize that Coiltek made all those different coils, but none are for the beach type PI`s like the Garretts, Whites, Tesoro`s, or Eric`s PI`s. It seems no one is making them for just straight PI`s, (meaning the Minelabs are sort of a hybrid). I would think if they work so well for the Minelabs, that they might work out well for the normal beach type PI where a longer footprint would be desireable in beach hunting. Maybe it`s something to do with the pulse returning to a uneven shape. Thanks Chris, John/Ct.

Hey Chris,
Coiltek, which you know, also makes the newer 17x10 mini UFO searchcoil.
Have a Happy New Years!

Now I guess I`ll have to try to build my own rectuanglar or elyptical, seeing no one makes one for Beachscans. John/Ct.

John,
There is no real difference between a Minelab and other PI detectors as far as their coils are concerned. Each brand name of PI's optimize the number of turns of wire on the coil they use along with some finer points of the coils design.
This coupled with the type of coil connector they use (if any) makes for the compatability issues.
Very few people realize just how few detectors are actually sold every year.
The investment to make an elliptical coil for a particular detector
would maybe bring a return of sales for less than 50 coils world wide.
