Eric ,aquastar question

Hi Eric, In my last post you said that the Aquastar would be the best for beach and water up to chest deep, but also that the case is waterproof to 100'. So are you saying that total immersion is ok but that the unit won't work that well because of the signals generated by deeper saltwater? Also, you mentioned the unit was designed to find gold primarily, is this to say it will not find coins at all? Thanking you in advance for your reply! ED.

Hi Edward,
Sorry if there is some seeming confusion here. The Aquastar was designed primarily to have good sensitivity to gold rings and jewellry in shallow water. It will in addition find coins of all sorts but sometimes its range might be a bit less than expected. For instance a quarter will not have as good a range as a nickel. This is because the response of the Aquastar is optimised for lower conductivity items in which the majority of gold falls. A quarter is made of a higher conductivity metal and the transmitter pulse of the Aquastar is rather too short to give the best signal.
As to the case being rated at over 100ft; this is because even a shallow water detector needs to be rugged and immune from leaks. If something is going to leak, it is more likely to do so at a low water pressure that at a high one, where the seals will be squeezed tighter. Better for the unit to be over engineered in this respect and have a good safety margin, than to risk a leak and write off the electronics.

Thanks for the reply Eric, I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. Am new at this and this forum is fantastic! I believe that the Aquastar is the one for me.Is it possible to exchange the coil for the unit and design a coil to "mow the grass" on the beach in a wide swath as in a three wheeled bike and sled? Again thanks Eric, you will have my business!

Hi Edward,
Glad you like The Forum. It has been very popular and a good vehicle for the exchange of information on PI detectors.
I can make a 24in x 8in rectangular coil for "mowing the beach" but you may have to turn the sample Pulse Delay control back a bit, to 15uS. I think that it is very unlikely that I can make a big coil run faster.
I'm not sure where you are, but if in the <IMG SRC="/forums/images/flag.jpg" BORDER=0 ALT="USA">, please contact Mr Bill of Surfscanner Detectors for prices. He is my US agent. Just click on his banner at the top of the page.
