Eric Foster said something about the formula of a square coil

Hi there Iamarc..

Try this...copy it into your Google search

Yes that works. Put in 1 for relative permiability of air, and the wire radius is the conductor only, not including the insulation. There will be a bit of variation from the measured value due to the tightness, or otherwise, of the wire bundle and the conductor spacing due to the insulation.

Hello Eric ,
I have experimented with target underground 3mters depth with square coil like the famous 40 X 40 inch (1meter) loop inside pvc tube.... and compare with a round 32 inch (.80cm)
same inductance... same resistance and always the winner is the round shape, without doubts..... big difference.... and also the center pinpointing is not very good with square and i have noted 2 centers in the square(???) when pinpointing !!!! but with the circle the center is the center !!!!.....better for pinpointing a target...
What is your thinking?
Alexis.
