Eric: What are CS6-PI Intenal Adjustments

A

Guest
Eric,
On 18 Sept, 2000 you stated that the CS-6PI has three internal presets. What are each of these adjustments for? What is the procedure to ensure that these adjustments are optimized? Also, Can the gain of the front end be modified (increased) to improve the depth?
Thanks

Hi,
Two of the presets set d.c. levels in respective amplifiers and if adjusted, will upset performance. Can't remember about the 3rd one but can check when I go back to the office. Point is though, that there are no adjustments that can be made to tweek the performance. The gain of the first amplifier could be increased but the bandwidth would then decrease and you would have to lengthen the sample delay resulting in less sensitivity to small objects.

The third preset is a balance setting which, if changed, will cause the detector to false when the coil is swept in the earth's magnetic field.

Eric,
Thanks for the information.
The only thing I have been able to dig up about improving the performance of the CS-6PI is to (1) reduce the 270 ohm resistor in series with the headphones to make the audio louder and (2) reduce the main timing cap on the 555 timer from 1000pf to 750 pf to increase the frequence slightly and improve the sensitivity on thin gold rings.
What are your thoughts about the consequences of doing these modifications?

Hi,
No problems with trying either of these. It is easy to go back if you find it doesn't work out. Only thing to bear in mind for those who want to try modifications, is the implication to the warranty if things go badly wrong.
Eric.
