ETrac v SE Pro

DOGMAN

New member
Not decided which one to get. Basically, for the extra money, will the Etrac with all it's extra 'bells and whistles' put anymore finds in my pocket compared to the SE pro? Thanks.

It all depends on where you are hunting & what you are hunting for.

Also, have you used an FBS or BBS machine before?

With answers to these questions it will be easier for forum members to offer you advice.

I have both. In all fairness I was much more frustrated with the SE than the ET. However, I only used the SE 2 months before the switch but now I don't think I want to go back. I think you'll get just as many answers as there are biases...probably all for good reasons to the poster. For the difference in price in 2 years I think you'll be happier and farther ahead and glad you got the one with the most recent features. I don't think those new features are 'bells and whistles.' They really make a difference. Jim

Thanks for the reply. I will be using it on beaches, plough soil, pasture. One of the better fields has in places a lot of iron but has produced many good finds. I used the Exp 2 when they first came out, but sold it after a short while due to the battery consumption and weight.

There are users here with older XS models who do outstanding jobs, better than a lot of us using the newer machines. I loved my Explorer and it was a great performer. Why I like the Etrac better? For me and my mineralized ground conditions it runs so smooth without chatter and falsing compared to the Explorer. I like the real time sensitivity reading, I like the BIG numbers since I need reading glasses with the Explorer. I like the better distribution of weight/balance, I have yet to feel fatigue using the Etrac. I love the faster processor, it recovers and separates much better. I personally have found that the Etrac for me has been better at picking out good targets in iron or heavy trash areas. I do miss the tones of the Explorer, probably because I was so used to them after years of use. If I had not used an Explorer before it wouldn't be an issue. You can't go wrong with either and there are some great deals to be had with both in slightly used condition. Just be sure to get one with the Pro coil, it definitely is my pick as far as large coils go. Good luck!

Jeff & Maria's response is excellent and I don't have much to add to it. As it pointed out, the Etrac has features as opposed to bells & whistles that make it very different from the Explorer.

All I would add is that if the weight of the EX II was an issue then I would go with the Etrac. The machine is lighter & better balanced (due both the Pro Coil and change in bend angle of the handle). Oh, and be sure to get a copy of Andy Sabisch's new book on the Etrac & Explorer. It is a godsend to understanding & using either machine.

I dont own the Etrac, but i do like the improvements that was made to make it simpler to use... for me that was Minelabs intent. I like what they have done... but i like my SE as well. There is always going to be debate... even among verious explorer users. You cant go wrong with either so if you have the money why not go with the improvements.
