Hi, this is my first post so here goes. I recently purchased my Etrac the last part of June of this yr. So far I probably have about 15 to 20 hours use of this machine under my belt. I have found 140 coins so far, 1 junk ring, 1 ladies Timex watch and lots of junk(no complaining gotta dig it to understand my readings) anyway out of all the coins so far only 3 coins were somewhat old, a wheat penny and 2 Jeffersons in their 50's. I'm not complaining because I only hunt a few hours at a time and some of the coins were fairly deep 5+ inches, but no silver? No older nickels or pennies? Is it me or where I'm hunting( a few old parks and schools)? Thanks

It's where you are hunting most likely.

I agree. Without knowing what kind of soil you're in, if your Sens. is running high teens to mid 20's....you shouldn't have any problem hitting an 8-10" deep coin. The E-Trac usually hits real hard on those deep of targets and gives good tone and descent numbers.

Got a test garden?

It sounds like your doing everything I did to learn my machines. It took me quite a while to find silver/gold. There is no "big secret" or "magic settings" to finding silver/gold. If you run your coil over it, you will find it. When I was new in this hobby, I thought there might be a setting I missed, or that I was doing something wrong but the reality of it is, a good amount of luck/research is required to place your coil over silver/gold. This past year I have finally come to the realization that a certain amount of research is necessary to find locations where silver/gold is present and since then, I have not come home one single time without silver or gold. Keep at it and you will find it. Research you hunt sites, put in a lot of time, and the "good" finds will come. Good luck and HH -Marc

Does sound like where you're hunting as the major issue. When you hit silver it hits solid, if you have dug 150+ coins, I don't think you would have missed it easly.

You're on the right track, maybe have a read (or 2nd read) through Andy S's book. Parts of it make more sense as you get time up on the machine.

Cheers

Thanks everybody for the feedback. At least now I know that I'm on the right track. This machine is amazing at how it hits on coins. I have been reading and rereading Andy's S book. Also since I have had a little expierience with my etrac, the book does seem to make alot more sense. Again Thanks To All for your help..:)

I've had my etrac about a month now. Believe me the etrac will have no trouble picking up coins at 7+ inches even in dry packed dirt. At least you've found a couple of nickels; I haven't found one yet. Every time I get a reading that's in the nickel range it turns out to be a square pull-tab or small bits of can slaw. Keep at it, the silver is out there, just found a 1947 quarter last evening.

I agree with the others.......location...location...location...most schools and parks have been pounded pretty hard. Nothing is ever hunted out they say but, there are still allot of places that has not seen a detector or very little detection. Try to gain permission to hunt some home sites or old farms they are usually pretty virgin or close to it. Then again I just posted pics of a beautiful older home I have permission to hunt and I finally found one silver rosie yesterday. Other than that just wheat's and clad. I guess you just never know. Good luck and HH.

its ALL about location, I rarely hunt anywhere that I don't have the possibility of finding 100+ yr old coins.

Exactly and me as well.
