excal 1000 vs 800 for small gold

cliff in mi

i have the excal 1000 and i air tested it with a few small gold chains and they didn't even raise a little beeb from my machine. i would like to know will the smaller 8 inch coil for the excal pick up small gold chains . if not is there anything i can do to pick light gold chains. thank you

Yoy won't get small chains, or even fairly large ones. The size of the individual links are below the size threshold for detection, so the detector ignores it.
This is a blessing when hunting around small bits of trash for other things, but not if you want chains.

You will often hear that Sov/Xcal is sensitive to small gold.......but the SIZE of the "small gold" is seldom mentioned.

A smaller coil will be of little help. It's usually going to be a clasp or a pendant that will give you a response....it has to be something large enough as an individual target to be picked up...otherwise about the only chance you have of getting a chain is if it is in a tight pile.

I have a new Excal 1000 as well. I was air testing it with a 14K gold necklace with a dime size pendant. It never made a sound in Disc. I switched to all metal (pinpoint) and it hit out to about 6". Had a nice sharp tight unbroken sound that I would have dug.

I have been reading Clives book and he talks quite a bit about using all metal. This might be where I end up most of the time when I don't have too much iron to deal with.

I have the older Excal with a factor installed 8" Sunray coil, set in disc. it will knock out iron and pickup my 14kt. gold anchor link chain spread out with no pendents. My CZ20 just barely picks it up almost have to touch it to get a reponse.
