Excal II questions

Member
I posted this over on the friendly metal detecting forum also. Hope some of the more experienced Excal users can help me out.

Will be buying an Excal II - YIPPEEEE! Would like some input on set up/options. I am fortunate to have the funds to set it up the way I want it - just need to figure out what that is. So, Excal users help me out.

Hip mount? best set up?

Straight shaft? which one?

Best scoop for sand?

Best scoop for water?

Any other should/want to haves??

I have been detecting for years on land with only a couple excursions onto dry/wet sand. Help me out everyone!

Any help will be appriciated.

I can help you out in the scoop department... I have the rtg 6" and find it is not big enough.....An 8" would make it easier to get the target in the first scoop....

If your in the water w/ no waves, make a floating sifter to dump your scoopings in....

That is the scoop to get in the 8 inch and make your own straight shaft

U get the tube at Aircraftspruce.com get 6061t6 7/8 OD .745 ID 4 feet @ $3.20 per foot #03 36450.Your lower shaft will measure .744 which makes for a very nice fit requiring no lock nuts. Go to a bike shop and get the long bar ends with the bend $19.95 a pair and pick up a package of foam grip covers (4) for $9.95. Use your arm cuff off your old S rod and the pods for templates to drill the 1/4 holes. Use 1 3/4 x 1/4 SS bolts if U can find them otherwise get 2 inch and grind them down. Use SS wing nuts on the pods and a SS/nylon lock nut on the cuff. I usually remove about 6 inches from the 4 ft length so I can put much more lower up in the tube for more strength
If U don't use the tubing from Aircraft spruce all bets are off

I have to say Erikk wont stear you wrong on putting together a nice straight shaft. He gave me all the into and its just like he said...... excellent when finished. I happended to have a Sov upper shaft and used the grip.... other than that.... sweet.
