excal knobs/pots

I did some thread searching and am pretty sure everything is ok, but just wanted to double check. The disc and threshold knobs on my excal can be turned 180 degrees. I should say "could" be turned 180 degrees, I'm not about to force them. When I got the excal, the disc knob dial didn't line up correctly so I was a bit worried until I was able to field test it and everything checked out ok. Today while finishing up a hunt I noticed the same thing with the threshold knob. When the pot clicked to the off position, the dial was pointing too far off. I tested it and it still functions properly. From thread searching, it seems that it is just the knobs. Is there any way this could have damaged the pots? If not then I'm not too concerned and will just see if I can tighten them down, or else get new ones.

OBX Franz,

Actually the knobs can be turned 270 degrees, or 3/4 of one complete turn (Excal II). You have it right "Don't force them". The SENS knob can be turned until it makes a click noise putting you in AUTO. If they seem tight, you can spray some Divers Silicone Spray on the shaft of the pot, under the knob, to make it easier to turn. Good maintenance procedure as well for the O-rings. After a hunt I rinse it off, let it dry and spray under the knobs on the shafts, work the knob back and forth a little. Spray anything that is black as well such as wires, connectors, rubber, etc.

As for the yellow part of the knob with the line being off, you can pry off the yellow cap, turn the knob to its farthest point, and put the cap back on so that it gives a correct indication. It will just pop back on. Some people put a little dab of super glue on the cap to keep it from coming off, but I have not had to do this. I just pushed it back on and it was good to go. If the knobs are loose and spin a little on the shaft, just tighten up the nut on the shaft a little before putting the cap back on. HH

be aware that i believe there are plastic nuts under each knob cover....if memory serves me correct you must unscrew the plastic nut prior the prying off the knob....

Yes, there is a nut that holds the knob on, and can be slightly tightened to keep the knob from slipping, but the Yellow cap or cover just pops on and off.

This is the kind of maintenance information I would like to see more of - How to maintain the parts on an Excal, silicone frequency of the knobs, slippage, maintenance of the electrical seal, (where to get those different parts too). I have gleaned a good amount of info from reading posts, but having all that in one place, or at least a "folder", maybe a "sticky" post would be good. That would make it easier to find about fixing various things at least. I haven't changed any o-rings, and I know OBN has a post about those, and several other things. I'm not afraid of screwing anything up on the machine, but it's good to have more information than I can get from the Minelab booklet. I'm familiar enough with diving to know how to inspect o-rings, but getting to them, replacing them, etc would be nice to be able to go over before doing it.

Actually, if OBN would put all his Excal videos on a CD, I would be willing to buy something like that - maybe he doesn't have everything covered yet, but it's a thought/idea. His videos are great, if he could get a write up of each of those things, along with diagrams, he could have a great CD/book combo.

An alternative to the super glue is silicone. The super glue can actually make it nearly impossible to remove the knob and it will bind the nut to the blue insert. That's if you can get the yellow cap off with if its been super glued in place. Silicone is actually a pretty good adhesive but much easier to separate things that are bound with it. Just food for thought.

Oops, I meant that I could probably turn the knobs 360 degrees if I tried. I will pop the tops off tomorrow and check, hopefully the knobs are just loose. Definitely going to do an o-ring check too.

Frank, Whats the verdict? just the Knobs or the pot itself..........
