Excal warranty question...

New member
I just bought my new Excal and I was wondering if perfroming the headphone modification voids the overall warranty? I did not have a warranty with my last Excal so I wasn't really worried about it, and the sound experience was truly superior with the speakers mounted in a new headset. But with the coil wiring problems I had with my last machine, I don't want to take a chance in voiding my warranty.

Yep, it will void the warranty unless you can do something without cutting wires or anything, like just changing the headset muffs or something, where you can put it back the way it was stock before sending it in for warranty repair. Probably the only things you could do without voiding the warranty besides that are change the shaft or use a aftermarket battery with higher capacity, because all that could be swapped back to stock to send in for warranty work. Also, don't put any spray on bed liner on the coil to get rid of the cover because from what I hear that will void the warranty too. I don't see why, but I have heard it does.

After your warranty runs out the Excal accesseries sticky has a link in it to a thread on installing an ikeilite waterproof connector on the pod so you can change headphones with ease. I need to dig up some of the better heaphone mods/replacement threads and put links to them in that sticky as they seem a pretty popular thing to do and those questions pop up a lot. If anybody has any good thread links on that stuff shoot me a PM with them.

Not really followed the Excal headphone mod stuff close over the years...Correct me if I'm wrong...but aren't some guys changing the muffs but keeping the transducers (speakers) stock? Are you able to do that without cutting the wires? Is the audio much better when that is done? Are any guys changing the transducers too? And what seems to be the most popular headphones when guys are swapping out the entire headphone set to something else? If anybody can fill me in more on this stuff I'll know more of what more popular headphone mods to post a few links for. Either shoot me a PM or post it here. Thanks.

Yes, as a matter of fact I did a post a year or so ago with a whole bunch of photos showing exactly how I did it. Unfortunately the pics are gone. It can be done easily without cutting wires, but you pretty much destroy the stock earmuffs in the process and there's no way Minelab would not know they were tampered with, and therefore the warranty might be voided. I used the Peltor Bulls Eye for mine and I swear the difference in sound quality was nothing short of astounding. It is a shame that Minelab can't spend a few more bucks for a decently insulated headset. The speakers themselves are great, they just need a better headset to live in.

Thanks for that info. I'm going to dig up the best Findmall message links I can find on various headphone mod/replace stuff on the Excal and then post that in the accesseries sticky. If anybody has any please post them yourself in that stick or send me them in a PM and I'll throw them up all together. These headphone mod/replacement questions for the Excal always pop us so I think it'd be worth throwing a few more links in there about that subject, as I think I only threw up one link so far on putting a waterproof ikelite plug on it to change headphones easily.
