Excl on dry land?

Dig

Active member
Hey everyone...quick question for those of you who have tried this? Anyone ever relic hunt on with an Excal? I am in Tallahassee as I write this and I have come to understand that my sisters home is over historic land. I went out into the yard but the settings I use at the beach dont read so well. When I am setting up I cant get a steady tone in threshhold (disc) and have been having to start in pinpoint. When I use disc setting it never nulls out....it does ring but usually over shallow trash(coke can tab). I use pinpoint to locate and try disc and sometimes its a target to dig and sometimes its just quiet. It seems to false a lot as well. My settings are disc 0, sens 6-7, vol 3/4 full, ..... Let me know...maybe this thing just isnt for land hunting. Works great at the beach but sounds like its gonna have kittens here.

Dig, you are running a 1000 coil, right? The 800 is far superior in land hunting conditions, because there is so much trash and you need the extra separation. It is probably nulling over targets due to being in close proximity to loads of iron. You could always turn the Discrimination up and cut out all but silver, maybe up as far as noon(or farther), as there is probably no gold there anyway and just cherry pick the silver? At any rate, you are going to have to sweep very slowly, good luck!

Yeah its been an itnteresting experience so far. Had my niece and nephew out with me helping me and hopefully they will catch the bug. This whole area is rich with old treasure.

If you are working farm fields then you should be okay, expect to dig big, deep holes - not a good idea on the nicely manicured lawn. The pinpointing on the Excal is more than adequate in the water but for the relic hunt on dry land it is a little spotty, hence those big holes.

Good hunting to you,

Tried it one time for about 45 minutes, Not a good experence But.. You are the man if you can. The excal is a beach hunter only for me, next time you head out to one of these spots let me know, I have two ML..Explores, will ship you one....just give me a weeks notice. Joe

Thats awfully nice of you..... I am interested in doing some coin shooting and relic hunting but so far I have only the Ace 250 (which is in Mass. with Jess) and the Excal. I will definately let you know about the explorers and again Thank you!

Gulf Hunter.... you are right on. I have used the Excal 800 in parks, etc. I do PREFER the beach, but when I cannot get to the Jersey Shore, I detect close to the house (parks, etc.). I run on all metal mode, sensitivity max. If I hear a target, I switch to disc. If it goes null (iron), I don't dig. If it sounds good, yes, I dig. I have been able to locate coins under the grass using a small diameter rod of brass. I can feel it hit the coin, etc. After that, I use a small shovel, lift the sod, then use a White's pinpointer to find the target.

Good luck!
