Old Hunter (41 Years) New to the Explorer II !
Started out with a Heath Kit in 64

It gets easier. I have been using the Explorer since the day they actually arrived in the States back in Jan of 2000. It's a Great machine but takes some getting used to. Most people can get used to it but there have been many that haven't been able to make the transistion. You have made some really nice finds already so you must be doing something right!!!! <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)"> Hang in there it's worth the effort!!!

Don, I started using my XS in April of 2003, after many years using a Fisher CZ6. Like you, I read all the material and couldn't wait to get started. Then it happened! The constant BARRAGE of sounds! I was SOOOOO not used to it. The Fisher made 2 sounds, that was it, so this was certainly foreign.
I can say though, in all honesty, that although I thought about getting rid of the Minelab soon after receiving it, I'm am VERY happy I didn't. The finds I've made in areas that I hunted heavily with the Fisher are absolutely ridiculous. More seated and other deep coins than I can count. I've picked out 400+ keepers (210+ Indians) in less than 2 years of use.
So, to summarize, stick with it. You'll notice that your ears tune out the signals they should, and you'll find more goodies in those "hunted out" areas than you could ever imagine.
HH,
Jeff

You can turn down the tone variation a little until you get used to the sounds without affecting depth. Nice finds but you wait until you really get the hang of it!

Fred

Don't do what I did, get all flustrated and put it down for 2 years. That let the compitetion work my area for two years. Now when I go to trashy areas its my detector of choice.

Only 31 years hunting ( a youngster ) I thought i was listening the train wreck with the explorer. It's funny cause now I hunt about 90% of the time with the machine wide open on IM with ferrous sounds. It will just take a little time to try to see what this great machine is telling you.
