Exp II in the shallow surf...

Joe G

New member
I tried the shallow surf yesterday at the beach. As soon as the coil hit the water, it started falsing all over the place. I remembered reading something about checking the coil wire and making sure it didn't flop around near the coil. I had a very small loop taped up near the coil (so there wouldn't be any tension at the coil connection (I had just put on an X-1 and those were the instructions). I tightened up the loop and it was better but it still falsed too much. I tried lowering the sensitivity and even ran on auto sens. but it didn't help much.

Anyone have this problem? BTW, I siliconed my coil cover and it looks intact (once out of the water the problem goes away)

Do you think taping the wire straight up the shaft a bit before coiling it around the shaft will help?

For anyone else having intermittent falsing problems, I did cure one thing... I noticed early on that I kept falsing at the end of my swing on my left side. I took my cell phone out of my left pants pocket and put it in my shirt. The problem went away :)

I haven't had that problem. You didn't say where you're running your sensitivity. I've seen machines that would do that if the sens was too high. My Quattro did. It's fine at 18 on the 20 scale in the wet sand but in the shallow water it has to come down to 17 or 16 to quiet down.

Also, water in the coil cover could maybe do it. You say you think it's intact. As for the coil wire, it's definitely not good to have a loop of coil wire hanging over your coil. Definitely tie it off to the shaft and get it out of the way. Finally...and this is just an idea, because I don't know...you might try turning "Fast" off if it's on and on if it's off, to see if that has any effect on it. If not, try deep off. The FBS machines get crazy depth at the beach anyway, so you probably won't miss much. It may settle it down.

I can usually run around 25 to 28 in the packed sand while still maintaining stability. I didn't try lowering it manually (probably should have done that). Come to think of it, I have the identical problem with my CZ-20 and the only way to stop it is to lower the sens...

I did however try it on auto sens... perhaps that does not react as quickly. My coil cover is fine. Once out of the water there is no problem with falsing. If I had water in it, the problem would remain. When in the packed wet sand, I use Deep on fast off. I'll try shutting off the deep. That sounds like a good idea. I did find the post about the coil wire and the person said to tape the coil straight up the shaft a bit before starting to coil it around the shaft. I'll give that a shot too. I was going to try it last night, but this dummy forgot to check his battery level before he left for the beach. Got in about 15 minutes before it died :) Live and learn.

Thanks for you help.

I was actually going to try to do that with my CZ-20 before I'd even seen the post. I also fly fish (although not as much anymore), so I'm used to using epoxy for saltwater flies... Thought it would be a good thing to try on the bottom of the coil.

As far as the sensitivity goes, I don't think I got down that low... I know that even at 20, this sucker goes deep, even more so at the beach. I'll fix a couple of things when I get back from vacation and see how it goes.

Thanks for the help!

Man, that's a bummer on the battery deal. I did that once last summer. I drove 20 minutes to the beach, parked, got all my stuff, traipsed down to the wet sand...beautiful Friday night after midnight, low tide. Fired up my Sovereign Elite...realized after about 5 minutes that I picked up the wrong battery pack for it...NOT the charged one. By that time the only thing to do was pack in all my stuff, strap on my rollerblades, and go to "Plan B". :lol

Ok, on your sensitivity...yeah, I would think that was WAY too high for in the water. I actucally haven't had my Explorer II in tha water yet...just the wet sand. I've only had it to the beach once. But I've been plenty with the Quattro and the Elite I had and I will say that wahtever you run at in the wet sand you usually have to crank it down just a tad to run it stable in the water. So do that, for sure.

As for the coil wire, I'm an absolute freak on keeping my coin wires under control. I don't have any excess over my coils and I don't even overlap the wire when i coil it up the shaft...ever. I treat it like spark plug wires...don't overlap them, keep 'em neatly separated. I use that soft rubber black tape to keep it together and it's easily replaced for cleaning, disassembly, etc.

In alot of cases yes, when I first got mine I tried it for a little while and put the stock coil back on. Later I slowly got the nerve to use it again I wasnt sure at first that it was better and was scared I would miss something. If you read my post below about finding that charm necklace for a friend at a ball park at least 50 years old with tones of trash and by the way my sensitivity was on 4 and I picked up that brass charm @ 8 inches loud and clear the stock would not the charm was stuck in the red dirt on its side and yes there was a ton of trash ETC...
