Explorer 2 question...

Mark in NC

Member
As anyone ever had their ex 2 run smoothly, then after about 5 to 10 minutes get really unstable (similar to running sensitivity too high). It would settle back down every time I would power cycle it... then start again...5 to 10 minutes. It did this with sensitivity in manual or auto. It has an inline probe, so I guess that figures in the mix too. The instability would happen regardless of probe switch position... All connections seem really secure... any ideas?

Thanks,

Once the batteries get warmed up your problem starts..Might clean the terminals and change batteries for a starter..Don't own an in line probe but understand they can cause problems...

Elimenating the inline probe and rule that out as the culprit, Next try a different coil if you have one. After that it is anybody's guess.

You don't provide enough information, it could be your settings, ground or electrical interference. With machine off, press and hold power button until factory settings reset and try that. Did you just get the machine new or used and are you an experienced user?

I have not had or heard this one - if you figure out what the cause was, please post an update. Good luck.

Occasionally mine will suddenly sound like a slot machine spinning. The screen just flashes numbers as well. I then turn sens. setting from manual to auto or vice a versa, that seems to clear it. It could also be my in line probe though I have not tried eliminating it. The problem only happens once in a while and seems like more so now in the warmer months. I keep hoping that once it stops chattering away like a slot machine it will read 777 across the screen and coins will start pouring out of the control box, but so far it hasen't happened.
I will keep you posted as to this problem.

I'll try eliminating the probe from the equation first. I don't have a stock upper rod, so I may have to wait until I can buy a used one to test that out. I also don't have an extra explorer coil, so that swap will have to wait too. (although I have a Sov coil I may try to trade for one) I used an XS for about a year, and enjoyed it, especially at the beach. The 2 has also been impressive, i got it in a trade a few months ago.

To answer Holedigger's questions, I have done a full reset (3 times) and it follows the same pattern even from factory default settings... I've been detecting for around 30 some odd years... (my first detector was a 1 knober! :) )

The explorer only started doing this on the last couple of trips, so I'm also going to try the battery suggestion... (could be some oddball corrosion or something)

Thanks for all the tips...

End of the battery compartment. take a brass brush and scrub the ends of the batery contacks. If the contacks are loose in the ends just put some super glue around the edges of the plastic so the metal contacks won't move around on you. Make sure you go back over the contacts again after you super glue the contacks in with the brass brush. MY SE gave me a little trouble like that and I just did those things to it and never had another problem with it. Love my SE. Hell of a machine. Like it better then my old XS and my Exp ll. :D: :D: Later HH Jerry aka Tinfoil.
