I remember a post awhile back about moisture getting under the cover causing it to give false readings.I can't see it effecting depth but I do get alot of dirt and moisture under it.Is there any truth to this and what is the correct method cover on or off?

I have experienced operation stability problems when soil or water would get between the coil and cover. I have found dried mud, water, and find soil between the coil and cover. When removed the operation was normal again. This problem is one that has been there since the first detector with a coil cover as we had the same problem back in the sixties.
Once way to solve the problem is by sealing the cover to the coil with RTV. Several times over the years I have read of some similar method to seal the coil and cover but like the RTV as it can be removed and yet will keep the coil sealed for years. It also looks like a factory seal and comes in black or white which at one time was pretty much the color of coils.
RTV is a rubber that when cured is semi-soft and keeps water and soil from between the coil and cover and only takes about 15min to apply a nice neat seal. They sell RTV at Wal Mart or an auto parts house. I use black because when applied and the excess removed you cannot tell it is there as it looks like a normal part of the manufacturing process for the stock coils.

There is no question that junk in your coil cover can cause irratic performance (and thus can probably have an adverse affect on depth) so I always try to keep it clean. Over the years I've tried numerous methods to seal the coil cover but eventually it always leaks. Since you've sealed it the last thing that comes to mind is that the seal broke so it can delay finding the problem. I just check it from time-to-time especially if it gets flakey.
One thing I also do is rub a little ArmourAll to the bottom of the cover if I'm detecting on grass to make it ultra smooth ... it seems to glide over the grass easier.
The only time I leave my coil off is when I'm detecting in shallow water in sand (not rocks, etc). Have found that my Sovereign detector works better without the coil as leakage is much more of a problem when you hunt in the water and you don't want extra coil buoyancy. So far I haven't noticed any wear on the bottom of the coil. However, I don't do that much shallow water hunting so that likely helps. <img src="/metal/html/wink.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=";)">

Of course, that show read "... works better without the coil COVER as leakage is ..."
