I found this item listed at KellyCo and ordered one to try out. (Has any one else used one?) I was informed that it would work on all Explorer series even though ad states S and XS.

Produced specifically for the World Famous Minelab Explorer detector series (XS and S models) to reduce the overall weight of the Minelab Explorer using a rugged ergonomically designed hip-mount. It is not designed or manufactured by Minelab. However; it is specifically designed for use with the Minelab Explorer detectors and is manufactured in the U.S.A.
 
I think that is the kit made by Birch Manufacturing. I have a brand new one around here somewhere, but I never got around to installing it. Hopefully someone else on the forum will be able to give you a first hand opinion.
 
You'll not believe the difference in the overall weight by using a hip mount, you'll be able to swing a lot longer with it. I built one similar to the one that Kellyco has, it works great! My only advice would be to get a snap hook and mount it on the bottom of the battery compartment. The snap hook is needed to fasten the housing to your belt loop. If you don't the housing will hang down in your way every time you bend over to cut a plug.

Thanks for the input.I just don't understand why so many complain about the Explorers weight when a hipmount conversion is availible.I am 43 and in good shape and can swing the Ex. II all day but it makes for a hard day's work and I figure why not make it easier on myself.
Prevention is the best medicine they say.And I want to save my back and shoulder so I can still hunt in my latter years the Lord willing! Of course in 20 years the Explorer SE-5 will probably have found everthing ever lost and I won't have anything to hunt except plastic or paper coins.

I have one of those and used it when I had a sore shoulder. I got it probably six years ago. It does work good. Make sure you have the thing fastened onto the pole good (and bring the tools with you). Mine kept slipping out. Also, when I got mine they had two versions of the hand grip. You had to order or specify the one with a "cap" on top. It keeps your hand from slipping up and up and off. I neglected to get that hand grip, so I had a little trouble with that (not sure what they have now). It worked great for my sore shoulder - really cut down on the weight. Unfortunately it is not the most comfortable thing to hunt "in". You have the handle/control box around your neck and attached to your belt, headphone wire going to that, cable going to the swinging portion. Now, bend down and dig... in the woods... It is very cumbersome, but it does work. Once my shoulder healed I never used it again.
