Explorer II question for the pro's !

Put on my Sunray X-12 and the question is do you reduce sensitivty or gain to make detector run stable without losing too much depth.

I completely disagree with Bunn. Sunray makes AWESOME coils. I Love the X-8!! Try turning down the sensitivity down. My X-8 I can turn the sensitivity up compared to the stock 10.5 coil. "Usually" the bigger the coil the less sensitivity you can run.

You might want to try the Sunray forum but I'd say it's just going to depend on the conditions where you're hunting. I'd set the sensititvity to where the machine is "stable" or a notch or so higher and the gain at around 7. When you hit a deep target, before you dig it, play with the sensitivity and the gain and see what it does to the signal.

The Sunray's pretty popular on the beach and while I've never used it, I'm told it works well, is stable and lighter than the stock 10.5. Before the summer, I'll be looking into either that or the WOT. Right now I'm waiting for my Platypus...

The reason I gave that reply is if you think about it who are the pros? I think that the people at Minelab are the pros they made the machine that we all love ,the engineers made the coil that would be best suited for practically all types of hunting the pro is the person that can use the stock coil to its extreme, last time I checked the company that makes that 12" coil has yet to produce a machine better than the ex2.So how can a company make a coil thats better than the company that made the machine. If you have a question for the pros get in touch with Minelab and ask one of there engineers that made the machine, oh yeah ask them what they think of iron mask-16 you may be shocked.Sorry to be blunt but its like people find a great thing and try to make money on someone elses genius if its there its there no matter what coil you have, its the pro that can take a stock coil and use it,with the machines capabilitys to find things inbetween trash and iron.So in closing on my last post the only pro is you,not the extra coil the probes its the research not the coil.Good luck and see yah!

That theory is so wrong that my head is spinning. Based on that theory you saying that the engineers at Minelab make better headphones then lets say Grey Ghost or Black Widows? What about the old 550 meters that Minelab put on the Sovereigns when Sunray had a more stable 180 meter easier to read meter. A company like Sunray can spend numerous hours on development and research with specialty items. Although with that comes a price and the average user is not willing to spend big dollars on a specialty coil. Many true hunters are willing to spend the extra cash to get a more stable or deeper unit (tweaking To best suit them) while Minelab just tries to keep the cost down as much as they can to push units out the door for the average user. You might want to try Sunray products before you slam them.

Self proclaimed pot stirrer "extrordinaire"

They said that hunting in- 16 will gain no depth ,all youll do is find alot of iron thats why the screen is black and white so retards will know what there digging, and yes I am quite extrodinary thanks

So what's new about that. I don't recall EVER believing a depth increase was acheived with -16 IRONMASK. Maybe at first I might have....maybe and maybe you might have, but I'm sure, as time went by, you would have found this out for yourself this was NOT the case, like I did and you would never have needed info from any engineer to assert this.

I also found that that word "retard" used in the way you did, is one usually used by people for other PEOPLE, that have some sort of disfunctional, anti social, brain disorder.

I was actually calling MYSELF the pot stirrer extrordinaire, that's what I did and what I am doing,......NOT YOU.

(Here we go.There are echoes of Rosario and Ringpower in this discussion)

SO is this what you meant by trying to improve your image on the forum? Good work.

As for your comment on never having said "Sunray", you said pro's don't use the X-12. That's a Sunray coil.

As for your comments on IM -16, sorry to say you are still missing the point on that as well. Nobody ever said you get better depth using IM -16. You're the only one who keeps saying that. What I told you and everybody else has always said is that by running IM -16, you are hearing all the targets...nothing is nulled out. So the detector does not spend time in a "null" state. That way, if you are working in an area that has heavy iron or multiple targets then you may have a better chance of catching a GOOD target that you might otherwise have missed due to masking by a BAD target. Get it? So can we "put to bed" the idea that IM -16 has anything to do with getting more depth? It doesn't. Will it allow you to dig more good targets? Quite probably, in my opinion and that of many others. So if you are so dead-set against it then don't hunt that way. It helps to be in tune with the tones and the digital readings to make the best of that, but the Smartfind screen can be of use also. I regularly switch between the two when I hunt, to compare them and to improve my knowledge and skill with using all the info the Explorer II gives me. There are times when it makes sense to use a discrimination pattern and let the machine filter out a lot of stuff. When you're relic hunting in the woods or hunting the beach are not those times. Hunting for relics in a field or the woods is the perfect situation to run IM -16 and crank the sensitivity up. You want to get the deep stuff and for the most part, everything out there is a potential good target.

I was hunting a clean field today for about 20 minutes before I got rained out. I had the Explorer II on IM -16 and running 28 sensitivity with a nice clean threshold. I was using the 12.5" coil. I got a signal that was showing in excess of the depth meter...nothing showing on it at all. The signal was a weak but consistent 00-22 or so to 00-29 and all in between, but it was repeatable. In Smartfind it was bouncing around but regularly hitting in the upper right. It was too deep to get ANY pinpoint on at all. I dug a very deep hole and got a 1910 Wheat penny at well over 12 inches deep.

But what do I know? I'm apparently a retard. :punch:

This is amusing to say the least!!!To each his own---we all have the best machine out there---go out and use it the way you find the most and stop the bickering!!!! MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING!!

I honestly dont care about my image on the forum, im not a hobbyist looking for a merc dime or a ih pen im board have found enough on ground where the thrill is gone going under water this summer.you all have a good time to each his own hope you learn your machines trying to get rid of mine.

Yes, you're correct...HE said the X-12 and YOU said "last time I checked the company that makes that 12" coil". So if you want to play word games, that's fine but you were clearly talking about the Sunray X-12 coil and you were clearly WRONG.

Up the meds, dude.

>>> I honestly dont care about my image on the forum <<<

You said you did. Now you don't. That's cool.

>>> im not a hobbyist looking for a merc dime or a ih pen <<<

You see, therein lies the problem. I believe I can safely say that IS what motivates MOST of us. Not ALL of us, but most of the folks I know still enjoy pulling a Merc dime or an Indian Head. Or a Barber or Seated coin.

>>> going under water this summer <<<

Make sure you crank up that discrimination so you can knock out all that aluminum trash.
