explorer malfunction?

Im a newbie and i just got a used explorer xs. Is it normal for the detector to beep 3 times when i scan over a coin? when i scan over 2 coins it starts to sound like a musical instrument. also the external speaker is barely audible even when set at max volume. anybody know whats wrong or where i can get it fixed? thanks.

Hi Bryan,
The three beeps on a coin is probably because the coin is so close to the coil. That is a good way to tell if a coin is laying right on top of the ground. Try raising the coil up about three inches or so - should give you more of a single tone. This is not a problem in the field.
The speaker... I have always used headphones so I cannot say if yours is normal or not. I would spend the money to get head phones rather than fixing the speaker.

because as Robin said your close to the coin. 1 beep as the edge of the coil passes over then 1 beep on the center and the 3rd beep on the trailing edge of the coil. Two reasons you should use good quality headphones are picking up the faint signals and a whole lot more battery life.
