Next week is finally my trip to Minneapolis for 5 full days of detecting with Michelob AKA Cousin Mike. I am wanting to take my detector as a carry-on item in case my luggage gets lost so as not to have my trip ruined.

Has anyone recently tried to take a metal detector as a carry-on on an American Airlines flight? I did a search function on the forum here and did not come up with any good recent answers as to what they are allowing now a days.

I take one of my metal detectors in my carry on luggage when I go to England and there is never a problem. I usually include the battery pack in case they want to power it up but I've never been asked to do so. All of the people who I travel with do the same. I usually fly Continental but I don't think it matters what airline you use. Be sure to break the machine down so that it can fit in the overhead compartment and wrap it with clothing or bubble wrap to be sure it won't get damaged in flight. I pack my back up machine in my checked luggage. Have a fun time in MN, don't forget your battery charger and happy hunting.
