Explorer SE Pinpointer Question

Dud

New member
Hello friends,

I expect to buy an Explorer SE Pro in the coming months and so I have been viewing online videos in anticipation. A couple of the videos that I have viewed with supposedly Explorer SE detectors have had pinpointers hardwired to the main detector. I can't find any mention of such a thing on the Pro models currently advertised... is that a feature of older models? or are the video titles inaccurate? Just curious.

BTW this is my first post on Findmall, I'm impressed with the site and the people who hang out here, seems to be a very knowledgeable and friendly group. I'm looking forward to getting back into detecting and joining in!

Kind of a crappy picture, but here is the SE Pro with pinpoint button.

Or are you referring to In-line Probes by Sunray?

Thanks McDave, but that's not what I mean. In two videos, I think made by different guys, they were using a pinpointer probe that was hardwired to the detector itself. (Edit to add): and thanks very much for the trouble you went to in posting that image!

Yeah I re-read your post, it must have been an in-line probe. I wasn't aware that they existed... seemed pretty cool. Anybody have any opinions about whether I *need* one of those along with the new machine??

Ahh yes, the In-line probe. Would love to have one on my new Explorer coming soon. Actually I use a Garrett Pro-pointer. Either one is very handy...highly recommended.

But I will let the more seasoned Explorer users tell you about the Sunray, I've never used one. Good luck !

Well thanks again for clearing up the mystery. Looking forward to warmer weather, and to swinging a metal detector again. Appreciate the help.

Ive used several hand held pin pointers. Most cause EMI unless you move the detector a bit away from you. You may or may not hear them with head phones on, but some do vibrate. Some have great depth like the garrett, others dont so you might as well just waive hands full of dirt across the coil like we used to do. I was always one to put them down and walk off... taking hunting time to find the darn things. However, they are cheaper and they arent detector specific like the in line.

Now the in line acts just like an attached small coil. You can use pin point and they will give you the same processed tones and TID on the screen. They have great depth, depending on the sensitivity, as much as 3 inches or more in the dirt. That is enough for many of the surface targets .... which means you dont have to dig, just pop the target out. They are pricy, add weight, and cant be used on other detectors.... hey but you dont loose them. They are water proof and pretty darn durable. You just cant beat the speed these things give you on target recovery..... that equals more per outing.

Thanks Dew for the additional info. I've been looking at the Sunray website for the last few minutes, and it looks like something I'll at least consider. Currently showing a price of about $190 plus s/h, which probably won't be cheap because it says that you have to send them the upper shaft for factory attachment of the inline probe. Like you say, it sure looked efficient on the videos I was watching. I dunno, 200 bucks... something to think about. Thanks again.

Hey Dud, Welcome to the forum, Just wanted to tell you, that Sun Ray inline Probe that you saw on the Explorer is a bit of money but most users who have used it for a while it's a must have. I have had one as long as I have used Explorers and can't imagine detecting with anything else. Just flip a switch and grab it and your good to go,Don't even have to take the headphones off. It's just another small coil that runs off the detector, no extra batteries. Check it out on somone's detector if you can.

The Sunray x-1 probe is absolutely a 100% MUST HAVE weapon for your detector. Visit the Sunray forum on this website and you will see a long thread there about it. I will not hunt without one on all of my machines.

No one mentioned one of my favorite things about the Sun Ray Probe. I dig a lot of iffy deep signals. As you learn the SE you will find that deep iron will give you a "false" half-way good high tone signal. I can usually tell, but some signals just have to be dug up. With the Sun Ray probe, once you get within 3-4 inches of the target it will give you a true ID (sound). So lots of times I just dig close, check with the probe, if it goes to solid iron, fill in the hole. No messing around, or wasted time and effort. I have bought two Sun Ray probes over the years. Nothing like it!

Hi Ray and Welcome to Findmall!! That certainly sounds like a Sunray probe. When you are ready for a SEpro and a Sunray pinpointer, give me a shout and will make sure you get the best deal possible!

Welcome bud. You wont regret buying the Sunray probe. Its a keeper.
