Explorer SE sensitivity

Rich

New member
Hi I detect in clean fields in England, and I recently upgraded to an Explorer SE. I detected a field I have done before with my Quattro, and I set the explorer at Sensitivity 22, Deep, all metal, ferrous, and I kept getting readings of 00:01 when I dug down nothing was there so I assume it is falsing. Does this mean I have to reduce the sensitivity or have I got a setting wrong. I also have a 14'' coil I would like to use but if I have to reduce the sensitivity there does not seem to be any point. I would appreciate any thoughts you might have and any tips for a new guy with the explorer.
Thanks.

Hi Rich!
Do you always FIRST, before detecting run NOISE CANCEL? This is very important to do whenever you first turn on the SE or change coils. It's recommended by MINELAB to never change coils BEFORE TURNING THE MACHINE OFF however. I run sensitivity set at 32 max. Yes, at first I too got a lot of noise. The machine was telling me to SLOW DOWN MY SWING. I have found the higher I set SENSITIVITY, the slower I must go. One other idea I'll share is to NOT select AUTO-SENSITIVITY; to do so will result in less depth.

Also, kindly refer to page 60 of your manual referencing TONE-ADJUSTING AUDIO PITCH - I have my SE's VARIABILITY set at 10 (I like to hear the difference in target characteristics) and LIMITS set at 8. I find going any higher for LIMITS produces too SHARP a sound. I, like you really like the ALL METAL MODE-CONDUCT totally disregarding all the hype about DISCRIMINATION PATTERNS. IMO, they are totally useless.

One other suggestion; avoid reading the meter too often or relying on what it is showing you; my SE lies a lot. :) I'm finding it's ALL IN THE EAR; having a lot more success LISTENING.

Thanks,
GRB

What happens when you pin point? Does it lock on to a target and if you dig do you test everything that comes out of the ground...like rocks? Do you noise cancel? I am confused with this SE issue...I am liking my XS more everyday...

Hi Guys
Thanks for the info guys, I do noise cancel quite a lot and always before I start. On the quattro the coil was on the ground when noise canceling but on the SE you hold it 30 cm off the ground is this correct? When I pinpoint it, the sound increases to a high level but then stays at that level all around the area, making impossible to target. When I dig down there is about 20-25 cms of soil then a hard clay. With the quattro I have had finds 5 cms into the clay. The sensitivity is set to manual but if I switch to auto it does not do it.
Thanks again for your help, and I will check the audio pitch and re set it.
Cheers

Yes, MINELAB recommends to raise your coil up from the ground 30CM or 1 FOOT and hold it rock steady for 30 seconds or until the machine beep. Mine always finishes the procedure in 11 seconds. Be sure to stay away from power lines and transformers. And, before you start the procedure make sure nothing conductive is beneath your coil.

Dig easy!
