Explorer upper cam lock,what is the most common cause for these to fail,and is there an easy fix or is ther a way to work around this problem to hold the rod asm in place. Thanks Ron

Explorer Upper Cam Lock Fix?

I have got in a couple of them to look at where the little piece that suppose to tighten down on the shaft is missing as it probably broke and fell out. These put the pressure on the shaft and what the black lever pushes down on. The shaft will be very loose and fall out and been lucky as I had some used upper shaft I was able to push the brass pin out of the cam lock that holds the lower shaft on and take them apart and use this part to replace the upper one. Last I tried to get some cam locks from Minelab i was told they didnt have any to sell. The other ones i seen that were a little loose I have put a little black electrical tape on 1 or 2 sides as a shim that works good. Some I hear will paint the end that goes into the control head too to tighten them up. Myself I never had a problem with any of mine I use, but dont scrub the coil on the ground or swing real fast which can wear the cam locks I feel.
Rick,thanks for the information.The cam lock on the Explorer ll was working but after a while wouldn't put the pressure on the rod shaft to hold in place.My quick fix in the field was the use of electrical tape to splint together to prevent sliding which didn't hold up very well.I put some soft clear silicone put on the shaft,which you guess it can be very difficult to switch coils or break down the rod asm.I have an older Explorer and I compared the two cam locks and didn't see any difference with the one that worked.I'll take you suggestion and see how it works.Thanks Ron
You know, I thought the upper camlock was going on my Explorer but it turned out I had the upper shaft in upside down. The end is angled and if you put it in the wrong way, not enough gets shoved into the cam lock for it to hold on to. I went through a month + of misery/frustration. I then bought an X-1 probe with a new upper shaft, it fit rock solid.. So there I was with a caliper and crap measuring the width of my old one and the new one, wondering wtf is causing it to clamp tight. I finally realized that there was only one real way to put in the upper shaft.
I'm sure there is something in the directions that told me not to be such an idiot while putting it back together, but it happend and I thought I would mention it.
The other thing that happend to me was that little red tab thing flipped up and back up into the shaft one time. I was able to flip it back into place and the cam lock worked.
