I've never used an explorer but from what I've read the slower you search the deeper it goes, is this correct? Is this machine motion based? Like I said, have never used one but sounds like something I would like since I like to search slow. Which one would be better for a first time explorer user, the explorer , exII or SE? The SE with the Pro coil would be an excellent choice for you. I assume you're from Texas so the cold weather isn't going to impede your season? Expect to pour in some hours before you get the hang of it though. Once you do you'll be rewarded handsomely.

Hey John I have owned several Explorers and I have found the Explorer 2 works very well here in Louisiana, I did try the SE for quite a while but I was not pleased with the sensitivity it was very erratic at times where the Explorer 2 never gave me any problems....They say the separation was quicker on the SE but other than the color I could find very little difference BUT i could have got a bad unit ?
I am a believer that some machines were built on Fridays and and are not as hot you could say as others....LOL
Bottom Line you can not go wrong with a Explorer of any model just take your time hunt slow and learn your machine.

Each has its fans and price has to enter into it. The new E-trac is worth looking into since they have incoorporated the the screens, improved how the Cond sounds operate, stablized the dreaded bounce, and really lined up the where good targets fall on the smartscreen. Id say i kind of push my detector along more than swing it. Yes it is a motion machine but doesnt seem to pick up more mineral sounds or EMI the more you slow down. This really allows you to detect low and slow and sort out good targets from trash. Even the larger DD coils do an excellent job in trashy areas. I have the SE, but would like to have the Pro coil or even the Explorer II coil... i just think they are a little better.

I agree with dewcon4414. Yes it is a motion machine, so yes some motion is required to get the disc. to work. But the "go slow" admonitions you've been reading about, in my opinion, don't have much to do with getting more depth, per se. It has to do with target separation. The Explorer will indeed mask if you move quickly over good targets near junk. But slowing down will not cause depth loss (unless you came to an absolute stop), and will work great for isolating targets.

I think to many people take their detectors for a walk now days. If nothing elce the Explorer will teach you to slow down and listen to the nulls. You would be surprised how far you can swing your detector after a null before it recovers to pick up a new target. Since the machine processor will take more samples of the same area if you move slowly or overlap your swings, then it wont necessarily go deeper just gives it more time to ID properly based on verious distances of the coil from targets. The processes has to seperate a lot of data and the explorer is one of those machines if it can see it it can ID it.
