Explorers and planted hunts...

More and more I hear of Explorers being used on planted hunts.To me its like using a elephant gun for rabbits. Surely the coverage and noise cancel are plusses to prevent crosstalk. Personally I would want a light unit that is fast pinpoints quickly and has a frequency changer to prevent crosstalk. Most planted hunts the targets are shallow and speed is essential is my reasoning. In addendum whatever works and that is the hunters call..as in most hunts the field is cleaned in 15 minutes and an experienced hunter could quickly pinpoint targets and swing the Explorer for a short time in a rapid fashion and excell also...Of course if targets are planted deep an Explorer would be my choice and remember under these condition use FAST as it makes the unit quicker and more suitable for this enviroment...

The Explorer is not a good choice for planted hunts and for the reasons you mentioned. I think that sometimes people use them because that is the only detector they have. The pros come with their competition machines that are real fast that they have bought just for hunts. There may be some who can't afford more than one detector. I know that I couldn't for about the 1st year.

And I don't use the Stock 10.5" Coil either. I use the 5"X10" Joey Coil with a Tall Man Shaft on it. I also have my Explorer set up in Fast On and run the Sensitivity around 22 Semi-Auto during the hunt. One key thing is that you must do a Noise Cancel before the hunt or you will have more than a few other Detectors cross talking with your unit. I can keep up with the guys with the Tesoro's, White's, Shadow's, and other brands of Detectors with no problem. The Joey Coil makes the Explorer easy to swing fast along with the Tall Man Shaft so I can get the Coil further out and it also gives me a longer Sweep area. I know that I have doubled my finds before on what I was suppose to get versus the other Detectorist's finds, partly due to the smaller Pinpoint Area on the Joey Coil and also when I can't find some of these targets, I also have the X-1 Probe for Emergency Fast Pinpointing. Some of the targets end up on edge and also some are planted around 4"-6" range, not intentionally, but it does happen. Another way of making fast recoveries is scan the ground with your eyes and look for any signs of slits in the grass. This helps a lot but most of the time the guys burying the coins don't leave any traces. I also have the Sunray X-12 Coil but I choose the Joey over it due to less stress on the Control Box and Upper Shaft. So if it is like using an Elephant Gun on Rabbit's, well then, I sure am having a lot of success and fun doing it. Good Luck and HH!

My #1 choice for planted hunts is the Whites IDX (I have the Pro model). I've never been to one where the targets were deeper than ~3 inches.
You can vary the frequency with a quick knob-adjust, and you can hunt in the middle of everyone w/o interference. It's a quick-sweeper, light, and pinpoints well. And it's relatively cheap.
[BTW, for years it was my back-up machine, and I was continually amazed at what it picked up trailing my Minelab.]

Dan i use a troy shadow for comp hunts Quick light pinpiont is fast I luv the se but the troy is the way go for comp hunts just my 2 cents HH RonC
