Explorers XS, II and SE

Neil

Well-known member
Is everything interchangeable on the Explorers as far as the rods go? Meaning the middle rods and lower rods.
Thanks,
Neil

The SE's upper metal rod seems to be slightly smaller in inside diameter than the one on the XS or II. I had an XS plastic lower rod on a 5" coil. It would slide freely in the XS and II's metal shaft but bound up in the SE metal shaft.

Also the XS metal shaft has a square cut off but the II and SE shafts are cut off at a 45 degree. This allows the shaft to go into the housing about an extra inch. Feels stiffer, less flex.

I have an XS and bought a II lower rod just for the bigger coils and it works....it is not a tight fit but works....if I push down on rod when everything is locked down it will move but you really got to push hard enough...I also bought a X-1 probe which I believe it comes with the new improved II middle rod which has a crimp or little speed bump at the top end to hold it in the control housing better for it won't slip out. That is a super improvement. The SE I have no clue till I buy one someday.

I am considering buying a new SE so I have to ask. Why would you need to change the shaft or coil? Any other tips you could share with me about the SE I would greatly appreciate.
Thanks

On the Explorer, it is a pain to change coils as you typically need a piece of string to pull the coiled coil wire through the bottom shaft. I have a 8" coil pre-mounted on a extra lower rod and upper shaft for quick field change over.

Hey Jeff, I made a pull thru out of a piece of flannel, and gave the flannel a spray of Armorall, or 303...
I also gave the coiled lead a coat of Armorall, ~ this made the cable slip way better inside the lower stem.

Hope this helps.:)
