Expolrer Vs Quattro

I want the Get one of thies detecrors, Is the Quattro 1/2 the Detector of the Explorer? Is the Quattro easer to use, Will it go just as DEEP, Can you gyse tell more info on the 2 Dectorers??
Thank you Mickfin,

mickfin, I just had to jump in here on this, again. I'd say the Quatro, definitly competes with the Explorer in many ways, but the main difference I see with the Explorer is that it has two numeric readouts, one for conductivity and one for ferous. That gives you more information on whether to "dig the target or not". There are some other "goodies" that the explorer has but as far as depth, I think they are pretty close, from what I've read. I own the Quatro, and I'd say it's easier to use than the Explorer, has notch discrimination, goes very deep, and does a great job.I wouldn't let the Explorer scare you, because with any detector, your gonna have some kind of "learning curve", but as far as less of a curve, I think the Quatro has it there. You're not gonna be sorry with the Quatro, the only thing you might wonder about is: How much better or, "do I really need" this double numeric readout? I don't know, but like I've always thought, the difference between and Explorer and a Quatro is the difference between a fully loaded Honda Acord and an Acura. They're both made by the same company, but the Acura is more expensive and probably has some more bells and whistles.

Just got a Quattro and I love it, more than happy with it. Never used an Explorer. Beachguy 777 pretty much sums it up. Mike from Virginia has lots of good posts on both units, with comparisons. Bottomline as you search the forums you will find some that prefer the Quattro over the Explorer, and vice versa regardless of the price differential.

Hi Mick, I like the Quattro very much! But I use it when I'm not in a real hurry. It has a fairly long deadtime. But it will go deep too. It is super easy to use and setup. The Explorer is in a different dimension and well worth the extra monies. I use the Coiltek Platypus on my Quattro. You won't lose either way you go. But if your detecting time is somewhat limited the Explorer SE would be best Mick. I wonder when they will come out with the Exttro? God Bless Mick.

Thanks JohnA. I think that's a really fair post. Some will, some won't, but search the forum for reviews on both of the units, and I know Mike from VA, has owned and used both and has good things to say about both. I guess it's a matter of choice and price and then making an informed decision on the whole enchilada. I've never used the Explorer either, but I'd love to have one of those too, but I'm still very happy with my Quatro. Thanks again for throwing your feelings in on this. Marc Trainor.

Your analogy of an Accord and an Acura is a good one.

Both will get you down the road. Both are reliable and predictable. The Acura has a few refinements, "creature comforts", and performance mods that the less expensive model lacks.

Thanks Mike. I tried to make it relevant to the Quatro vs the Explorer, question, but, heck I know we're still comparing apples to oranges, in a sense, but that's kind of how I see it, without really ever using the Explorer. I know you've had extensive experience with both, and I'm always tempted to send the "new guys", or people who are tring to make a decision between the two to you, but I'm also trying to give you a "break" on this stuff and not inundate you with inquiries, but I'm honestly happy to see you still visiting the Quatro forum to talk about stuff. It really does "pump me up" and I think it's a blessing for the others too, because you really do have extensive experience on both of them, plus other detectors too, and a lot of success to back it all up. I'm just telling it like I see it, and I know some people may think I'm just kissing your (you know what), but that's how I really feel about you and your posts, and I'll back you on that, unless I ever see anything different, which I havn't yet. Marc Trainor.

Thanks man. Look for a post later on some stuff from today. Me and Karl hit the field again...Karl got two neat buttons and a 1945 quarter with the Quattro. Kicked my butt today!

Hi Marc and Mike, I love using the Quattro and know that it goes deep. In a way it would be hard to choose between the Quattro and Explorer. Being a dealer I am able to try both of them. So no matter if you have a Quattro or Explorer SE you have a good thing either way. Ok just wanted to say hi. God Bless Mike and Marc!

Hey, my buddy Karl and I hit a field toady...a well hunted field...me with the Explorer SE with the 12.5" Excel coil and he with the Quattro with stock 10.5" coil. I got two musketballs, 5 wheaties, and a couple of flat buttons. He got and 1800's button, a Great Seal button, a 1945 silver quarter, and a wheatie. He basically kicled my ass, in my opinion. Which is what I have usually been doing to him, but today it "clicked" and old Karl was on his game. He's getting comfortable with the Quattro...knowing his machine, and confident now that if he passes over it, he'll get it! I was very happy for him to out-hunt me today. Pulling those first silver coins out of the ground is such a thrill!

And if I didn't have two teenagers I would not have sold the Quattro. The Quattro had a nicer display was easier to use and actually went deeper(very close though) than my Exp II. With the extra info the Exp II gives I do dig less trash than with the Quattro. Overall the Exp II/SE is a more versatile machine.

Just my little two bit in here for what it's worth! I own both the Explorer 2 and the Quattro. Both a great machines. But my personal preference is the Quattro, as it tells me in less uncertain terms about the targets it reads in the ground. With the Explorer 2 I've found that I have to fiddle around with the settings to get it right, for the ground I'm working in. The Explorer 2 definitely does go slightly deeper on the goldfields, detecting faint targets that the Quattro has missed, but the slight variation really doesn't make all the difference in the grand scheme of things. If you want finer discrimination, and as Marc said, the two numeric readouts, then go with it. But the Quattro is definietly one kick butt machine, and boy does it go deep in the sand on beaches! :)

Right on Golden. Excuse me while I go get my back hoe!:| Who was that guy on the forum that used to say that? I got such a kick out of that, but you know I'm "funnin" you and I totally agree with what your saying!:|This "bad boy" goes deep, no matter what they say.:yo::|

Hi Mickfin you won't be sorry with the Quattro it pounds on depth . Two of my detecting buds use the Explorer 2 and as far as depth I have dug coins just as deep . Quattro is less complicated , fewer bells and whistles , and an easier interface . Quattro barks with the big dogs all day ! Hope you get one bud . Take care and good luck !....Mike (aka Ratman)

I love your post, Ratman. (It barks with the big dogs all day). Love it!:twodetecting: I totally agree. Explorer is great, but I've heard the depth with Quatro is very comparitive. Also, less bells and whistles. I own a Quatro, so I have some experience. I've doug pennys at 12 inches for sure and cans even deeper. This still is a "bad boy" in my book, so I agree with you totally. Quite a "no nonsense" detector and one to be reconed with. Marc Trainor.

Mirage that's a very informative post, and it seems to reflect similar posts I've read in the past comparing the Quatro and Explorer II. I love my Quatro, but I "gotta admit", I'm eating my heart out a little about the two numeric readings on the Explorer, so you can gather more info on the target. I'd love to get one or eprobably the SE somewhere down the line. Thanks for the post. Marc, (beachguy). P.S. However as Golden and Mike from VA will attest, I first need to put in some "serious time" with the Quatro to even warrent owning an Explorer. At least that's how I see it. I'm not afraid of the learning curve, but I couldn't see spending the money if I'm not gonna use the darn thing enough. :(:|

I love it Wirecheif!:twodetecting::crazy::| You need to give us the run-down on the new EXTRO!!!!(I'm pretty much kidding here, of course), but it sounds like fun. I guess it could have the iron mask, the two numeric readouts, and all that other fun stuff all rolled up into one display, that combines it's self and to top it all off you'd have a super bright backlit display that actually talks to you as you detect. You know I'm laughing about this as I write it, but would'n't that be neat to have all that. Hey, Minelab, are you reading this stuff???? Give us one of those detectors or at least a talking one. :twodetecting::|

Wow, I think the only 1945 quarter I've ever seen was in a coin store:(Keep it up Mike, your inspiring me and others too. You know I've only found one penny that was like a 1944, with my Quatro, but I know it could find it, I just have to get the coil over the darn thing and dig it. :|
