External speakers

Just wondering if anyone has ever used an external speaker mounted on a Tesoro or if there is such a thing and where one can be found. It will be used on a Sidewinder Umax, a Cortes and hopefully a new Vaquero soon. To many critters in the woods right now, plus having the daughter with me at times I would like to keep track of whats going on around us, but still get the audio that the headphones do.

No external speaker would do what a nice set of Headphones can, as far as enabling you to hear the subtle tones of good targets.

On my Silver I have been huntinting without headohones. I did not have any, Just ordered a set of Killer B's WASP. I hope this improves my game, Beale.

Beale it will enhance the tones that only you can hear once you get the headphones!!!

smokey63,

Use external speakers only if your hunting alone.............they are annoying to others.

I was in a area where somebody was using external speakers (on a minelab detector on a gold claim). It makes it hard to get in the zone.............Use headphones, its more considerate of others & with good headphones you can adjust to your pictikler hearing issues + you can hear those suttle sounds better.

Good Hunting...........HaRM

in the right place the open air stereo headphones work pretty darn good, if you can find a set you like.
The open air phones are the ones that just use a foam pad that set on your ears.
These still puts the sound at your ear, but in between targets and low threshold you can still hear much of what's going on around you.
But, like what's already been said, for those deep faint signals you'll need something to block out the ambient noise.

Thanks for the info folks. I always hunt with headphones when I am alone, but when my daughter is with me this time of year I usually spend more time keeping an eye on her. Just wanted something a little louder than the factory speaker. @hardrockminer we normally hunt in remote areas so we normally will not bother anyone else. @trueblue, I sure wish that the Sidewinder had a volume control. Mark, may give those a try. Any certain brand you recommend?

Well, its good to try different ones and brands. There is so much difference in those types of headphones from tone to output volume. At one time that was the only headphones I used (a decade or so ago) back then anytime I got the chance to plug in and try a different set I would.
They were the BIG thing for personal music players before ear buds came along, so if the kids or there friends would come in with some I hadn't tried I would plug them for a quick test, sometimes the cheapest ones would surprise me. But you should do good with,
Sony,
Koss,
Next is cord length, some of them are just to short although extension cables can be rigged up easy enough.
The only other problem is the mono stereo difference between model and brands of detectors, but adapter plugs comes with a lot of them.
I found the best one EVER at Big & Small lots years ago, they were "Koss Sound Partner" they were the only headphones I used for YEARS in fact i used them until foam rotted off.
Now Koss still makes a set made like them but the last time I seen them they were on fleabay and were pretty pricy, the are called "Koss PortaPro" now I haven't used these but they are very close to the overall way the headphones were designed.

Below is a picture of the "PortaPro's"
In most all hunting conditions the "Sound Partners" I had worked great! the only places I had trouble with them were in areas where there was a high level of ambient noise, like,
Traffic,
Trains,
Kids playing,
ect..

Did a little research about the Koss headphones,
The ones I had were the first model of these (1981) the Koss KSP headphones. I guess Big Lots got them on a buy out when the Portapros came out.
Anyway I found another Koss headphone that is still on the basic design, they are called the "Koss SportaPro Headphones" it looks like they can be had for around $20.00 (US dollars). If your interested in some open air headphones these may be something to look into.
Just keep in mind that I've not used the SportaPro's but if they are anything like those old KSP's I had they should do you well!

yeah its a real pita not having volume control not all of us want to wear ph's and the volume on my tesoros is set at is crazy loud , been leaving'em at home more an more and swinging the xterra in there place because it has volume control , yep try'd taping the speaker holes over ect but thats a waste a tape an time because ya forever modify'n addin an removing tape to suit conditions just yesterday the wind blew up in the bush and I had to remove all the tape  ...they should have put a volume control on the Outlaw , they coulda had a small adjuster coming from back or under the control box ,,,,,instead you'l be spookin everybody in a five km radius when ya turn it and its blasts out that annoying battery check

With the killer B's, I know I'll hear all the faint signals that could be a good target. I would never go out without a set to use. (JUST ME)
