F2 finds me a huge commemorative coin...

REVIER

Well-known member
Went to a new-to-me park yesterday morning, from the amount of clad I picked up I am thinking this is a pretty virgin site.
Lots of trash, but clad galore, too, so this was a job for the F2.
Just ran around a small part today, dug a bunch of foil, tabs and canslaw too, still looking for jewelry.
If it's here, I will find it...eventually.
Not only did I find about $8 in clad, got two wheaties and a couple of tokens too.
And something else.
I believe this is called a military "Challenge Coin".

I have looked at 1000's of images online and can't find any trace of this particular type.
I have been told some were made in very limited runs, so it might be rare but I might not ever really know.
It could also be a commemorative coin of some sort, too...I haven't got a clue.

What I can tell you is that it is huge...exactly the same diameter as a Morgan silver dollar, it is heavy, 32.3 grams, and it is thick.
Is it old, I have no idea.
It is a little worn, and a little scratched, but still looks pretty good.
Another cool mystery item to add to the collection, I guess.
I will continue to look for more info on this thing, if I find any I will update this thread.

That blew your headphones off! Hey, nice work on the clad...I only see one shiney q, so the rest were buried, are you using a screwdriver? That looks like a place to spend some time on the gold! :clapping:

It bounced between 92 and 96 on the F2 and yea, it was shallow and loud!
Right next to a tree where someone was probably sitting.
No screwdriver, I have a Propointer so just some very small easily covered up holes.
Found 3 coin spills too, 55, 75 and 96 cents in each, respectively.
Going back today to continue to look for some precious metals.

Good luck! Thsoe spills are nice to really rack up the count in a hurry! Good post, I'm heading out now too, thanks to you!

Lots of different institutions made challenge coins. Millitary, law enforcement, etc. I work in Law Enforcement and I have a couple different ones that my supervisors had special made. More then likely there would never bee any info on the internet about them. The last ones we had made were commemorating the 2012 Super Bowl and we were able to buy them for $5.00 a piece from the Jeweler so they must be able to make them dirt cheap. It is a nice find but there could have been a bunch of them made or only a few.
