F4 question on Phantom High signal

CanadaDig

New member
Hi, Im new to the forum and been reading many post. Everyone sounds so helpful.

I have a new F4 and have hunted for 70 hours and getting better every day. got my first silver Quarter here in Canada. So very happy even though I have dug 200 Bottlecaps each with a lesson. hahaha.

Question: If I have Disc on (iron and Foil) blocked......I sometimes get a high pitched sound at the end of a sweep or even in the sweep that sounds good. However, when I sweep over again it does not appear again. Im trying to figure out what my machine is picking up. How can the target be there one moment and not on another sweep.

Here is a tip from Monte......one of the most experienced detectorists at Findmall.....or anywhere else....in my opinion. Even though the model is different....the same principle applies.

Reverse-direction falsing on Teknetics Omega

Depending upon the ground mineral conditions, the presence of nearby trash, the Ground Balance setting and the Sensitivity and Discrimination levels used, it can be common to get a false 'beep' when reversing the sweep direction due to the pause at the end of the sweep. Much will depend, too, on the sweep speed, but if you're running close to the stability point then the detector can purr along rather smoothly when sweeping it over the ground because it's busy dealing with the ground signal processing.
When you stop and pause to reverse the sweep direction, there isn't any signal to be dealt with and many detectors might spit and sputter a bit. Different sizes and/or types of coils might also be more susceptible to such brief chatter. So, if you've checked the tightness of the rod-locks and cable connector as Ricky mentioned, but still have some issues, just modify your sweep speed, make a slow almost-pause while still moving the search coil and not an abrupt stop-and-start at the end of the sweep. Also, maybe reduce the Sensitivity a little, if needed.

Thanks a bunch. I just checked and my bolt holding down my coil is somewhat loose. I will try the suggestions!! Thanks for the quick response.

Hi Folks I did once hear from somewhere, that the Garrett pro pointer in your left or right pocket could get a detector reaction on the edge of the swing as well as a cell certain cellphones. I'd guess out of the two the phone seems more likely as its usually turned on, while if your like me i turn the pointer on and off after every use... But i have noticed the Pro pointer does send the F4 detector crazy if too close

The pro pointer in the OFF position makes my f-75 jumpy even a few feet away. I have to holster it behind my back. When it's off it's ok, wierd.

Phantom high tones are often attributable to the phenomenon called "wrap-around", where a weak signal (often a small piece of iron or a deep iron target, or a hot rock) will add its signal to the ground signal and shift the phase into the high conductivity region.

What Steve reports about the ProPointer and the F75 (and also T2) is true: when it's off, its transmitter circuit simulates a huge target that can be detected several feet away, whereas turning it on stabilizes and stops it from acting like a huge target. The "huge target" phenomenon is peculiar to the F75/T2 because those machines run close to the same frequency as the ProPointer.

Also, watch the way you are sweeping. Many people will " curl " the coil upward a little at the end of their swings. Floppy coil wires near the coil can also be the culprit.
