F44 All Metal Mode Question...

mike c.

New member
Hi guys,
I've had a question concerning the F44 and the F22 metal detectors and I guess now is the time to ask.

The F44 has an AM mode and the 22 does not. From my reading the F44 owner's manual I gathered that in AM mode, there are no different tones, just a VCO sound.

This got me wondering:What is the functional difference(I'm assuming there is one, there must be) between the F44's AM mode and my F22 in the Custom Mode with all of the categories set for VCO tone?

Thanx.

Hi mike c.
I'll give your question a try.

I don't have an F22. I do have an F44. So I can only tell you the obvious differences between All Metal and Custom on the F44. Hopefully, Custom on the F22 is roughly the same.

Custom on the F44 is silent search with full menu functions (volume, sensitivity, notch and backlight adjustments) just like the Jewelry, Coin and Artifact search modes. Default tone is VCO but three other tones are available as are adjustable tone breaks.

All Metal is a threshold based all metal search mode. The threshold volume level and pitch cannot be adjusted. It is a constant tone in the background although it is softer when the F44 has been properly ground balanced.
The menu selections are different in All Metal. You have volume, sensitivity, ground and backlight adjustments. The ground cancellation adjustment is a manual ground balance function which is similar to what happens when you press the ground grab button in Custom mode. In fact, when you press the GG button on the F22 and F44 both detectors temporarily go into All Metal mode. So, there is just VCO tone in All Metal, no notch discrimination but you do have numerical target ID. I am not sure about the F22 or F44, but some detectors use something like the all metal mode for pinpointing.

In theory, All metal (since it does not go through the discrimination/notch circuit and all the tone adjustment circuits) should be a little deeper than Custom or the other modes no matter how you set them up since it is filtered and attenuated less than the discriminated modes even when those modes do not have any notches set.

great question which was fun for me to research.....

thanks,
Jeff

Hi

also the Fe Tone volume works in Jewelry, Coin, Artifact and Custom modes. It does not work in All Metal mode (I think?).

I think there are four tones plus VCO in Custom Mode not three.

thanks,
Jeff

Excellent explanation,Jeff,I understand everything you wrote.I was actually on the right path myself, but you filled in some important details.

For the sake of complete accuracy for other readers of this thread,I will make one small correction:the F22 does not have a Ground Grab(GG) button like the F44,it has fixed ground balance.

Truthfully,I wish I had waited and got the F44 just to get the adjustable ground balance. However, funds were limited and the dealer took extra off of the regular price to fit it into my budget that I had planned for a second-hand machine(which he doesn't sell). That said,I can't complain, the F22 has proven itself to be a decent detector for the price.

Thanks,Jeff-appreciate your reply.

In regards to the FE tone volume-that feature caused me a bit of an issue earlier this Spring.I had taken the F22 out for the first time in my back yard, which is only a few yards from a brook that was raging due to snow melt and recent heavy rain

The brook was so loud I had to run the detector at full volume, something I rarely do.I had completely forgotten about the FE volume function and had the volume set at (10),which I thought was max. However,at that setting, iron audio volume is (0).I couldn't understand why I couldn't hear the iron grunt in artifact mode as was normal.I was getting occasional chirps.

I actually pulled the box out and was getting ready to ship it back to Fisher when something told me to check it again. After pushing the volume control button and seeing it roll past (10) to (11),(12)etc.,I remembered the Iron audio volume feature.Lesson learned:READ THE MANUAL to refresh your memory from time to time.
