F5 Acting Strange

Lenkster

This weekend while using my F5 I noticed that whenever tried to pinpoint an item the detector would never come out of pinpoint mode. I shut it off and turned it back on and it was still in pinpoint mode. I headed back inside and tried to figure out what was going on, in which I learned that I could press the pinpoint a couple of times and it would finally come out of pinpoint mode and appear to work fine. The next day I turned it one and it was sequencing through the 4 tones until I pressed the tone button a few times then it would stop. After this I decided to try out all the buttons and sequence the power a few times to see what else might be acting funky. I determined that every now and then it would still sequence through the tones but for the most part it appears to works ok except the notch button doesn't appear to work at all.

Has anyone had issues with the soft front panel interface?

By the way I have only had this detector since July 24, 2012.

Thanks,
Karl

I would give first texas a call after u change batteries just to see if that would work.

my t-2 was doing some strange things recently. it turned out to be the batteries i was using. heavy duty don't work in the t-2. hope your problem is something simple like that. good luck.

Think I have figured out what was going on with the sequencing. I was mistaken when I thought it was cycling through the tones. It cycles through the following numbers 01,02, and 03. Since it was only going through 3 numbers I took a closer look and noticed that the prefix was 0 and not A or D. So I started to twists the ground balance knob and it stopped. This is when I noticed that when I pushed the ground balance knob it would sequence through 01, 02, and 03. Well apparently the sequencing problem was associated with the ground balance knob getting stuck in a depressed state.

Now I have another question, what are those 3 states? I have read here in earlier posts about the ground balance knob being able to be depressed but not having any visable effect. So is this associated with a different version of software or a particular mode I might be in?

I tried all of the above with the new batteries and old batteries to see if low power levels could be a factor, but the same results were seen with both sets of batteries. Also the notch button still doesn't appear to work, but this could be that I have really never used it before to know if it worked in the first place. What I expect to see when I press the notch button is the strikethrough line progressing through the target categories. I dont see this.

Thanks for your time and your help,

Karl

I think you may be the problem however it could be a faulty unit.....For some reason in Fisher units it takes a lot of juice to pinpoint and can understand the other fellows indicated battery change..Perhaps a knowlegable club member local dealer for hands on help is your first option if not pinpoint buttons do go and may need a trip to the factory for service. With multiple changing facets it could be human error as you are new to the unit but again metal detectors fail every day so lets not rule that out either.

Karl,

Sorry, but your detector is sick and needs a trip to the doctor. :stretcher:
You'll have to send it in to Fisher to get it fixed.

Hope you get it back working soon.

Thanks Mike, I gave the support line a call to get a RA number but the Tech I was forwarded to was out so I left a voice mail. I hope it this process doesn't take too long. I can't stay away from the dirt too long or I start going crazy! ;-)

Just wanted to update this thread by thanking you all for your advice, I really apprciate it and it is nice to know there is a place to go with questions and have some very knowledgable people help you out. Thanks again.

I got a hold of some folks at Fisher Labs and I am very pleased with how nice and responsive they have been. They sent me all the info needed to ship the unit back and are shipping me a new one due to the fact that I purchased the F5 so recently.

Thank you all again!

Take care and HH,

Karl
