F5 discc question

New member
Hi All

In the manual for the F5 it show's that you can disc out everything including dimes, quarters and fifty cent.
With my disc turned all the way to max mind will not disc 10, 25 or 50, but if I use notch I can disc 50.

Is the manual wrong?

Also in disc mode I find the audio very week past about 3-4 inches, am I setting it wrong. Usually try to run my sen about 70-80 higher if possible.
and threshold +3-+5.

Pretty unimpressed so far with the F5. Really miss my CZ 6A.

Thanks for your help.

Here is what my manual says about the notch function.

The following target categories can be notched in or out:
Fe, Foil, 5

With your gain that high and the threshold at +3,+5 you could be missing a lot and getting alot of false hits.
Has happened to me trying to run to hot, I put the thres at 0 with much better results.

Hi Tony

What do you mean when you say you can extend the notch after +50? Does it not just go back to non ferrous?

Bobby

I've tried different settings. I'll dial it back to 0 threshold and lower the sen and see what happens. I may have to slow down also
because of the speed of the processor is giving me a lot more info than on my CZ. You know, the old dog theory.

Thanks for your help guys.

Tom

with my f5 I set gain at 55-60 thresh -1 to +1 never use notch just set disc to 12-16. tone 3 or 4 and I use a good set of headphones w/ volume control. If you notch out to much and can't pick up nickels 5"-6" deep you will not find gold rings. YOU HAVE TO DIG SOME FOIL TABS AND JUNK IN ORDER TO FIND THE GOOD STUFF. NOTHING IS FOOL PROOF. (WATCH SOME OF THE UTUBE VIDEOS JUST TYPE IN FISHER F5 ) ME 35 YEARS USING ONLY FISHER METAL DETECTORS.

Tom

I cut and pasted that info from my F5 manual. I don't see where you can notch out dimes and quarters.
Not sure what the manual means by 50+.
If you don't mind me asking, why would you want to notch out coins? Is it for relic hunting?

I am still learning the F5 myself. I get a little tripped up by the different functions of the threshold knob.
Seems to be a different function for all metal and Disc mode.

Good luck.
Tony

Some times I notch out the 50 cent display to get rid of larger trash when im running my disc real low in the Fe window (iron) when I think I might get lucky finding a ring!
Hope this helps.
Bobby

If you look on page 18 of the manual it shows everything notched out. Not that I would do this, i was just wondering if it was possible.
I'll have to reread all of Mike Hillis posts, I believe he give some good info on setting up the F5.
Like i said earlier, I'm going to slow down, realizing that the F5 is giving me a lot more info on a single sweep and the old brain hasn't caught up yet.

thanks guys

Ok here is my finds for today at my local lake here in VA. DISC 12 GAIN 60 THRESH -1 TONES 4 GB NO JUST SET AT FACTORY

turtleman,
The manual is wrong in regards to full disc. The highest it will disc is zinc.

Unfortuantly, the multi 3 and 4 tone modes go weak pretty fast, especially the high tone.
For more depth in disc mode you have to use the single or two tone modes or go to all metal.

The F5 cannot compete with any of the CZ units for depth.

Right Mke, my cz6a will go much deeper then my f5, but I think the f5 disc. better. What do you think? ( I LOVE BOTH OF THEM )

I think I have to come to your beach. Nice haul.

Mike
i reread your posts on the f5 today and that cleared a few things up. I was pretty sure the manual was wrong.
I tried something a little different at a local fresh water beach based on some air tests I did.
Ran the threshold at +9 the sen at 90, disc at 15 and 3 tones. What it did was made most of my Canadian clad a high tone except for pennies
which became a mid tone most of the time. On my CZ was just the opposite, Pennies were a screechen high tone and everything else was
mid tone. when it locked on a pull tab 50% of the time it was a loonie toonie or quarter, which i could figure out with pinpointing.
haven't found the magic yet with the F5. It just doesn't seem to lock on very well to anything. Keep trying.

Your getting there. My cz6a will do the samething, it's hard too switch back between them both you get use to the sounds they both make. When I"m hunting I will take a nickle and berry it about 6" deep and set and adjust either detector until I get the best depth and tone I can here, remember NICKLES=GOLD at least with my f5. tin foil will have crackling sound coins rings, rings will have a solid sound and so will pull tabs and bottle caps. I'm going out this morning with the F5 and tyring the 2 tone mode and setting the gain and thresh a little higher gain 80 and thresh around +4-5 and see what happens. will let you know how I do when I comeback later.

I'm retired( or as my wife says retarded) So I have a lot of time to metal detect at the 5 beaches here in this gated community.
